Proceso de construcción:

Planificación y estudios previos: Antes de construir el embalse, se realizaron estudios hidrológicos y geológicos para identificar la viabilidad de represar el río Bogotá y generar energía a partir del agua retenida.

Construcción del embalse: El Embalse Tominé fue creado a principios de los años 1960, y tiene como función principal almacenar agua para el control de inundaciones en la sabana de Bogotá y regular el Río Bogotá.

Aprovechamiento hidroeléctrico: Posteriormente se construyeron instalaciones hidroeléctricas para aprovechar el salto de agua y generar electricidad. Se trata de la construcción de un sistema de compuertas, turbinas y generadores. El agua almacenada en el embalse se libera a través de túneles o canales a una planta donde su energía potencial es convertida en energía mecánica mediante turbinas. Esta energía mecánica luego se convierte en electricidad mediante generadores.

Infraestructura de transporte y distribución: La electricidad generada se transporta a través de líneas de alta tensión hasta las subestaciones y finalmente se distribuye a los consumidores.

Este proyecto no sólo ayuda a cubrir las necesidades energéticas de la región, sino que también tiene un gran impacto en la regulación del ciclo del agua en la zona.

Abastecimiento de agua: El embalse de Tominé fue construido para asegurar el abastecimiento de agua a la ciudad de Bogotá y sus alrededores, especialmente en épocas de sequía. Al almacenar agua de la temporada de lluvias, el embalse garantiza un suministro constante disponible.

Generación de energía hidroeléctrica: La inundación del área también permite la construcción de una central hidroeléctrica para generar electricidad. El agua retenida en el embalse tiene un gran potencial para generar electricidad.

Desarrollo urbano y agrícola: la regulación del flujo de agua también facilita el desarrollo de las áreas circundantes, ya que el agua se puede distribuir de una manera más controlada, beneficiando a la agricultura y las áreas urbanas.
