In 1954 the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka overturned the Plessy decision, ruling that segregated schools were not equal and unconstitutional.

"The incident that launched Martin Luther King, Jr.’s, civil rights activities was the December 1, 1955, refusal by Rosa Parks, who worked as a seamstress in a leading Montgomery, Alabama, department store, to give up a seat to white passengers" (Spring p.118). 

The Montgomery Bus Boycott started December 5, 1955 and lasted over a year until December 21, 1956 when the "Supreme Court decision against segregation on buses, the Montgomery transit system was officially integrated" (Spring p.118).
