In the 1830's an Irish doctor by the name Brooke O’Shaughnessy discovered that extracts of cannabis could help patients with cholera. Not long after extracts were being sold at pharmacies.

After recreational weed became commonplace, the U.S. passed the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937. This act criminalized all uses of the substance except industrial.

It's status had changed under the Controlled Substances act of 1970, and was named a Schedule I drug.
