It's intention was to make the South's reintroduction to the union as easy and quick as possible. It was planned for the government to excuse all Confederates with the exception of accused criminals against war prisoners and high ranking officials. His plan, while mild, still angered people; the Radical Republicans were deeply upset by the moderacy of the plan Lincoln had curated.

As if the overwhelming hatred in America had not already been present regarding slaves as well as free black people and the white people (many slave owners) oppressing them, the Civil War broke apart the states even more politically. During and after Reconstruction, Northerners and Southerners came up with mocking nicknames for eachother (scalawags and carpetbaggers) which, while not seeming like a huge deal, only solidified that divide between citizens of the same country. Additionally, the Reconstruction was when we saw the rise of hate crimes against black people, such as the organization the Ku Klux Klan. The Depression hurt the economy so badly that  it "crushed the nation’s already suffering laboring class and destroyed whatever remaining idealism northerners had about Reconstruction" (American Yawp).
