Islam & Sustainable Development

Prof. Suhaimi also gave us link to a recorded lecture that we were supposed to learn today. The topic is about Islam and Sustainable Development.

Islam, like many other religions, emphasizes the importance of living in harmony with the natural world and taking care of the environment. The concept of sustainable development, which focuses on meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, is consistent with Islamic teachings on environmental stewardship.

Islam teaches that everything in the world belongs to God and that humans have a responsibility to be stewards of the earth and its resources. The Qur'an emphasizes the importance of preserving the natural world and living in balance with it. For example, the Qur'an states that "the earth is the Lord's, and all that it contains" (Qur'an 2:29) and that "there is not a single thing but with Us are its storehouses" (Qur'an 15:21).

In addition, Islamic teachings encourage the use of natural resources in a responsible and sustainable manner. The Prophet Muhammad is reported to have said that "the earth is green and beautiful, and God has appointed you his stewards over it" (Sahih Bukhari). This stewardship extends to the use of natural resources such as water, land, and energy, as well as the protection of the environment and the conservation of natural habitats.

I'm glad I was born a Muslim and learn about this in my study. It is truly an eye opener. Sustainable Development is important to me as important as it is to other Muslims. The Qur'an teaches that God created the earth and all its resources for the benefit of humanity, and that we have a responsibility to care for the earth and use its resources wisely. The Qur'an teaches that we should not squander the resources of the earth, but rather use them in a way that is balanced and responsible. By adopting sustainable practices and policies, we can work towards a more just and equitable world for all people.

For today's lesson, we learn about Maqasid Shariah and Sustainable Development.

There are some similarities between Maqasid Shariah and sustainable development in that both seek to promote the well-being and prosperity of individuals and communities. However, sustainable development is a broader concept that is not limited to a specific religious tradition and is focused on addressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, and inequality.

There are also some specific areas where Maqasid Shariah and sustainable development intersect, such as the protection of natural resources and the promotion of environmental sustainability. Islamic law contains many principles and guidelines related to the responsible use and management of natural resources, including the prohibition of waste and the obligation to preserve and protect the environment.

In summary, while Maqasid Shariah and sustainable development have some overlapping concerns and principles, they are distinct concepts that address different aspects of human development and well-being. I can conclude that as a Muslim, SDGs are very important as their goals met eye to eye with ours.

The Challenges to SDG were explored by us for today's lecture.
There are many challenges to achieving sustainable development, both globally and locally. One of the key challenges is Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges to sustainable development, as it threatens the well-being of people and the planet. To address this challenge, we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and build resilience to future shocks.
Poverty and inequality remain major challenges in many parts of the world and can undermine efforts to achieve sustainable development. To address this challenge, we need to ensure that economic growth is inclusive and equitable, and that all people have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive.
The natural environment is facing increasing pressures, including habitat destruction, pollution, and overexploitation of natural resources. To address this challenge, we need to protect and restore the natural environment, and ensure that economic development is not achieved at the expense of the environment.
Conflict and instability can undermine sustainable development by disrupting economic and social systems, and by damaging infrastructure and the environment. To address this challenge, we need to promote peace and stability, and work to prevent and resolve conflicts.

To overcome these challenges, we need to take a holistic and integrated approach to sustainable development, which involves addressing economic, social, and environmental issues together. This requires the participation and cooperation of all stakeholders, including governments, civil society, the private sector, and individuals. It also requires strong leadership and the development of innovative and effective policies and practices at all levels, from local to international.

This topic made me aware of the challenges to come so I can be prepared.

Today, Prof. Suhaimi taught us about the roles of institutions for SDG. There are many different types of institutions that play a role in promoting and advancing sustainable development. These institutions can be public, private, or non-profit, and can operate at the local, national, or international level. Some of the key types of institutions that play a role in sustainable development include governments. Governments play a central role in promoting and advancing sustainable development, through the development and implementation of policies and regulations that support sustainability. International organizations, such as the United Nations and its agencies, play a key role in promoting and advancing sustainable development globally. Civil society organizations, such as NGOs and community-based organizations, play a vital role in promoting and advancing sustainable development by advocating for sustainable policies and practices, raising awareness about sustainability issues, and implementing sustainable projects and initiatives. The private sector, including businesses and financial institutions, plays a key role in promoting and advancing sustainable development through their investment decisions, business practices, and innovation.

For me, institutions are important for sustainable development because they have the power and resources to shape policies, practices, and behaviors that can contribute to sustainability. By working together and collaborating across sectors, institutions can help to create the conditions that are necessary for achieving a more sustainable future.

For today's lecture, we were supposed to do an on-campus observation.
A sustainable campus is one that integrates sustainability into all aspects of its operations and activities, including its teaching, research, and outreach. This can involve adopting sustainable practices in areas such as energy and water management, waste reduction, and sustainable transportation. It can also involve incorporating sustainability into the curriculum and providing opportunities for students to engage in experiential learning, such as through internships or service-learning projects. To become a sustainable campus, universities and colleges can take a number of steps, including:

Conducting a sustainability assessment: Universities and colleges can assess their current sustainability practices and identify areas for improvement.
Developing a sustainability plan: Universities and colleges can develop a plan that outlines specific actions and targets for improving sustainability on campus.
Implementing sustainability initiatives: Universities and colleges can implement a range of initiatives to improve sustainability on campus.
Engaging the campus community: Universities and colleges can involve students, faculty, and staff in efforts to improve sustainability on campus.
Measuring and reporting progress: Universities and colleges can track their progress towards sustainability and report on their efforts to the campus community and external stakeholders.

According to these features, I'd say IIUM met the requirements to be a sustainable campus.

From Disciplinary Strength to Transdisciplinary Approach for Sustainable Development

Today, we learnt about disciplinary strength and transdisciplinary approach.
A disciplinary strength approach to sustainability focuses on the expertise and knowledge of a particular discipline or field, such as environmental science, economics, or social science. This approach is based on the idea that each discipline has valuable insights and contributions to make to the understanding and resolution of sustainability challenges.

However, many of the challenges of sustainable development are complex and multifaceted and cannot be fully understood or addressed through a single discipline. This is where a transdisciplinary approach can be useful.

A transdisciplinary approach to sustainability recognizes that sustainability challenges are often multi-dimensional and require the integration of knowledge and perspectives from multiple disciplines and sectors. It involves the collaboration and co-creation of knowledge and solutions by researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders from different disciplines and sectors, with the goal of finding practical and viable solutions to sustainability challenges.

A transdisciplinary approach has several advantages over a disciplinary strength approach:

1. It recognizes the complexity and multifaceted nature of sustainability challenges: By involving experts from multiple disciplines, a transdisciplinary approach can better capture the complexity and multifaceted nature of sustainability challenges.
2. It promotes collaboration and co-creation: A transdisciplinary approach encourages collaboration and co-creation of knowledge and solutions, which can lead to more creative and innovative solutions.
3. It allows for the integration of diverse perspectives: A transdisciplinary approach allows for the integration of diverse perspectives and approaches, which can lead to more inclusive and equitable solutions.
4. It is more practical and action.

Overall, it seems to me that we need to utilize transdisciplinary approach for better result in attaining the SDGs.

Assalamualaikum. Greetings and salutations to all, Muhammad Nur Afiq bin Mohd Adli is my name, and my matric number is 2111407. I am also from Kampung Parit 10 Timur in Sungai Besar, Selangor, and I am presently continuing my studies in Bachelor of English Language and Literature under AHAS KIRKHS in order to obtain a respectable career that would allow me to fulfil my future goals. My interests are limited to animals, video games, anime, music in particular, and the arts in general. Painting, sketching, doodling, and comics are just a few of the things I enjoy drawing. I occasionally occupy my time with creating 2D animations (rarely nowadays).

In a nutshell, I have fun learning during this course, SCSH 1201 Sustainable Development: Issues, Principles, and Practices. I was able to gain important knowledge especially on the Sustainable Development Goals. I was able to know more people and get acquainted with new friends. As a learner in this course, I stand to gain a lot from it. Learning about environmental and societal issues is one of these advantages. I've learned about the different environmental and socioeconomic problems that the world is currently dealing with in this course, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and inequality. I have the chance to hone a variety of abilities, such as cooperation, leadership, and problem-solving. Working on projects that support social justice and sustainability as a student in this course gives me the chance to positively influence the world around me. Because of the variety of experiences represented in this class, my classmates and I have the chance to connect with people who share our commitment to bringing about positive change. Participation in this course can help me and my fellow classmates stand out in the job market because many businesses are now seeking people who have a solid awareness of sustainability and social issues.

Hopefully, these knowledges will help me change the world for the better, where everyone can live their lives without having to worry.
