2. Week 8: An individual reflective writing task, in which you reflect on the collaborative process and its final outcome. Post this to your usual reflective blog (Deadline 23:00 BST Wednesday 27th August)

3. Week 8: Your group should upload a short summary of their creative output to the online showcases. Feel free to add links to your finished project (Deadline: 16:00 BST Wednesday 27th August)

4. Week 8: Your group will give a 2-3 minute presentation to other groups, introducing your project. If you have made a video, use your 2-3 minutes to play it to us. (09:00 - 12:00 Thursday 28th August)

We define ‘translation’ as the act of changing words into a different language. For example we can translate ‘hello’ as ‘bonjour’, ‘merhaba’, ‘nǐ hǎo’, and so on. But for this project, you will explore more complex, metaphorical and generative ways of understanding ‘translation’. 

For example, in an era defined by the movement of global populations, what forms of ‘translation’ might enable us to understand each other - to navigate differences and build mutual  understanding? How might new understandings of ‘translation’ help us build a world of multiple perspectives? How might artists and designers work within - and contribute to - a culture of translation? And are there some things that cannot (or should not) be translated? 

Or from a more personal perspective, can the idea of ‘translation’ enable you to understand your own transformation as you move through time (getting older) and space (moving city or country)? And when you encounter other people, what forms of ‘translation’ are you using?

Brief

Over the course of the Pre-sessional, you will work as part of a group to explore the concept of ‘translation’. Together you will produce and present a piece of creative work that responds to your research and discussions. You will present your piece in Week 8.

This is an open project - you are free to decide what is possible. When choosing your format, please remember that you are creating and presenting the piece online. For this reason, physical items such as 3D sculpture don’t work. Instead, think about creating something that's easy to create and share online - for example, a design concept, a collage, a short film or animation, a game or an e-book.
