In the play Ti-Jean and his brothers playwright
by Derek Walcott tells the fable about three youngman challenged to defeat the Devil. The play is set in a place in the Caribbean, not specified. Ti-Jean and his brothers seems to be of black, Caribbean descent. Throughout the prologue ,the author characterized the devil as a racist (caucasian) Colonizer and brothers as the vicitms of his racist oppression.
One of the Devil's disguise is as the Planter the owner of a large Cotton and Sugar Cane plantation in the Caribbean where Colonial slaves owners' were notorious for their violence and brutality.
For both Mi-Jean and Gros-Jean, the Devil's racism is what leads to their demise; Mi-Jean was upset that the old man implies he his equal to an "ape" getting anry,loses his bet with Devil. Similarily Gros-Jean become upset with the Planter for various reasons. Planter's racism prevents him from remembering Gros-Jean's name through the brothers' faith Walcott cast racism and colonialism as systems literally endanger the lives of black Caribbean peoples.
