Disruptive Design Concept in My Own Words

The disruptive design concept is an approach for creative problem solving in this modern decade. As technology and science advance, more problems arise that require an alternate way of resolution. The disruptive design concept allows us to embrace the problem rather than opposing it. Through a three step process, we can break down the problem to purposefully lead the problem in a new direction. As the content explains, disruptive design is not about making innovations obsolete or creating something new, its about "intentional interventions into the status quo". A disruptive designer requires the understanding that, everything is interconnected, change is constant, the future is undefined, all change should be sustainable, challenge is part of reward, and change is iterative.

Step one in the disruptive design concept is all about diving into a problem through extensive research. This design method embraces the creative and active aspects of researching rather than viewing it as a dull endeavor. The first step is to formulate a research problem. This will direct your research efforts. The efforts can include lab-based, desktop, ethnographic, or observational research, surveys, or data mining. To organize findings, a research map can outline "what you are going to do, how you are going to do it, and what methods you will employ to get it done." This outline will provide a guide to fully investigate the problem and how you will be addressing it.

This image illustrates the difference between innovation and disruption. While disruptive design changes the course of problems, it does not create new ideas or inventions nor does it diminish them. It is simply applying a creative approach to current ways of thinking. As the content shows, this design method is all about, "embracing complexity, creating propositions that will foster changes that make the world work better for all of us, and designing the type of future we want to live in."

Examples of quantitative research include structured data, statistical analysis, surveys, objective conclusions, and lab experiments. Examples of qualitative research include unstructured data, interviews, focus groups, subjective conclusions, and observations.

Life Cycle Thinking

All innovations that are created in the industrial system experience a life cycle of 5 main stages. These stages include material extraction, manufacturing, packaging and transportation, use, and end of life. Understanding this life cycle as a disruptive designer is key to understanding the environmental impacts of a product. For example, the content points out how the majority of people focus on reducing the end of life aspect of the cycle rather than understanding the full impact that each stage has on the environment. Through analyzing each stage, we can create more effective improvements to reduce negative impacts.

To develop a research question, you should begin by addressing your interests in regards to the problem. This will allow you to formulate an open ended question to direct your research process. This question may change as time goes on, but it will set the framework for your approach.
