What is Learning Transfer?

Learning transfer refers to the process through which knowledge or skills acquired in one context are applied in another context. It is a key concept in education and training because it determines how effectively students or trainees are able to apply what they've learned to real-world situations. Successful learning transfer results in learners not only recalling information but also demonstrating their ability to use that information in practical, meaningful ways.

https://youtu.be/jdXH53EorFo?si=P7xhkRY1qggHSFJI

Positive Transfer:
Occurs when prior learning enhances the application of new knowledge or skills. For example, understanding basic mathematical concepts can help when learning more complex ones.

Negative Transfer:
Occurs when previous learning hinders the application of new knowledge. For example, a person who learned to drive in a country with manual cars may struggle to drive an automatic car at first.

Near Transfer:
When learned skills or knowledge are applied in similar contexts. For instance, a student who learns to solve algebra problems in class may easily apply the same techniques to real-life financial calculations.

Far Transfer:
When learned knowledge is applied in completely different or unfamiliar contexts. An example is a student who learns critical thinking skills in a history class and later uses those skills in analyzing scientific research.
