Diversity can have a big impact on problem solving. Bias may occur among team members, especially if the student is from a different background. Diversity also concerns those teachers and team members who are culturally different and may see the problem differently because of the cultural differences. When participants in problem solving hold strong beliefs solving a problem in a group may be difficult and complex. It is important to remember this and take that into consideration when you are collaborating in groups.

There is a model to follow when working with a group on an issue. Rarely does the process follow the linear progression defined in the text, but most of the steps occur in some fashion or another when group problem solving. As a TEAM you need to do the following:
-Analyze the problem solving context (factors)
-Identify the problem (share data)
-Generate solutions (propose specific strategies)
-Evaluate potential solutions (eliminate ones that are unlikely to be implemented or inappropriate)
-select the solution (final selection)
-implement solution (carry out and monitor solution)
-Evaluate outcomes (data)

The image selected supports these ideas because everything listed above has to be done as a TEAM! No one person can do all of this and be successful. Everyone needs to be working together for the best solution and implementation of that solution.

Problem solving as a group has a lot of pieces to put together. Many people are working together and many outside people may be involved. There are many steps that I see are not implemented at my school with certain groups. And then there are groups that do all the steps and you can see the difference in the outcomes. Making sure that the collaboration is there and everyone is doing their part is important in order to be successful and in order to ensure student success.

The RTI model fro IDEA begins with the classroom teacher. The teacher screens all students in order to identify those who may potentially be at risk for school failure. The identified students will then be monitored weekly. Tier one and tier two services are then provided. The video below gives a description of the IDEA version of RTI.

The RTI model for No Child Left Behind has a different expectation than the RTI model from IDEA. NCLB believes that with the right use of standards than there will be a disappearance of high-incidence disabilities. For the NLCB group, RTI stands for a service delivery system that unifies general education and special education. This graphic shows all the components in NCLB and the RTI process. With the process NCLB proponents believe in reform.
