SXSWEDU 2019 - Storytelling for Impact

I particularly enjoyed this podcast about storytelling because of what I am currently doing in class. In my current project, students are reading Persepolis and critically thinking about unique place/time and how universal truths lie in literature. By the end of the final product, students will be recording their own podcast. I think nonfiction storytelling, particularly for developing the coming of age story, is particularly impactful for a high school student. If students are aware of how to tell their story, not only will they be more prepared for college, but they will have a better idea of how their identities influence their interactions with others and with the world. I have many students who are interested in broadcast journalism, and I found this podcast useful in that it describes how multimedia can be impactful for feedback for students. Not only is this a way to build positive feedback, but it can also give students an outlet to restorative practice. I also loved this podcast because it talked about the difference between digital literacy and textual literacy and what is lacking in both, which is what I researched for my annotated bibliography.

SXSWEDU 2019 - Trust Is a Must

I chose this podcast because I have noticed that there is a lack of trust between my students and me, and my students and each other. At this point in our student's adolescence, they are becoming particularly closed off. The biggest struggle with building trust in the classroom, according to this podcast, is teacher turnover rate. This podcast is particularly critical of educators who began teaching as a "back-up," who didn't graduate with an education degree, who are looking for career changes throughout their time as a teacher. He notes that many people are leaving the profession, therefore those who stay have to work extra hard for student trust. I have been asked on numerous occasions, "are you staying next year?" "Ms. Musselman, will you see me graduate?"

I have mixed feelings about this. I do not have an education major, and I have received continuous backlash from my friends from college who are education majors, who hate TFA, who work in predominantly white schools with involved families. I wish that TFA did not have to exist. I am not/was not prepared. But the truth is that there are few people who are up for the job because of the lack of support that teachers receive. The lack of support that I believe stems first and foremost from a society that does not believe in equal education.

For my own mental health I've questioned my career choice; I'm sure all of us have. I've thought about going to law school when TFA is over so that I can make a "higher impact" at a distance from the students who cuss me out when they enter the classroom. These reactions are not because I do not care about my students. They are not because I don't know how to develop a culturally responsive curriculum or teach within the pedagogy. These responses are because I am a human being who wants to be validated for the work that I put in. Teaching, in definition, is delayed gratification.

Not only are education majors disappearing (as this podcast noted) but they are also not working in our schools. The teachers who are more prepared to teach my students than I am will not work in my school. I wish that my students had a teacher that was more qualified, that had more to teach them, that knew everything there was to know about literary theory and restorative practice, but they have me. Although I am not the most qualified, I care beyond belief. This podcast made me more passionate about the ways in which I need to show my students that I care and that I will be there the day that follows.

In a talk delivered by Jeb Bush and Laura Meckler, the topic of how our nation's archaic educational model is becoming outdated in the face of technological advancement is discussed. Bush begins his speech with an expression of concern, saying that "if you are born poor and attend a failing school for most of your life, it will become virtually impossible to get a job in the coming years." He explains that this is true because not only our schools are not putting enough attention in their curriculum on technology, but that our education system does not focus on mastery of skills. Bush argues that instead of moving students along to the next grade level because they received a "passing" grade (A, B, or C) we should be providing supplementary classes for students who do not receive an "A" in a course. His reasoning for this is that if a student receives a "B" in a course, that that means that they have not mastered 20% of the material that they were taught that year. When that student advances to the next grade level, that 20% of missed material will only grow greater in the coming years, seeing that our educational system is currently set up where each year builds upon the previous ones. Bush explains that rather than putting governmental funding towards student attendance and days in school, we should be allocating money towards programs that promote student learning. Bush also pitches an idea for implementing career pathways within high schools. He explains that rather than students simply receiving a high school diploma, that every student should be required to also obtain a vocational certificate. Bush argues that not only will this help students who do not plan to go to college get a job right out of high school, but that it will give students who do plan on going to college a greater understanding of what blue collar work is, and will inevitably result in more empathy within those students.

Learning means acquiring a new understanding of or way of engaging with the world. While some degree of memorization/raw material is necessary, learning is more about building connections, own systems of "understanding," and meaning. This can be informational or skills/practices, although as noted the two are interwoven.

I think that my definition of learning has changed, only slightly, since the beginning of our class. I think that learning is still visible when students are excited and engaged with the material at hand, but now, I also think that students are learning when the are developing their own questions about the world around them/society/the universe/etc. based off of the lesson that has been delivered. When students are able to use the content that we as educators provide them and formulate their own creative and innovative opinions/thoughts about the world with those tools, that true learning has occurred.

Learning is taking in new information or modifying current understanding of anything based on life experiences, the surrounding individuals, media, and culture. A large component of this is also being able to question learning and current ideologies someone already has. I think the larger component of learning is able to question your own thoughts and anything previously learned. I also think the learning includes the ability to transfer what is learned to different subject areas and personal life in a fluid way without making a specific connection to that topic.
