Children's Voices:
Timothy: I think the leaf will turn yellow.
Rayner: The blue water goes up from the bottom of the cabbage that's why it turned blue at the top.
Hanying: The leaf drinks the water like a straw.

Learning Disposition: Develop a sense of wonder and curiosity by finding out more on how plants drink water.

Teacher's Reflection: This experiment was a successful one. The usage of food colouring was an effective and visual way for children to observe the results after making their predictions. I intentionally dropped more drops of food colouring so that the leaves could turn colour more effectively. This strategy seemed to work as it took about half an hour for the leaves to change colour. ChenXi: I will draw the purple leaf as its colour is different from the other plants.
Dylan: I draw this leaf as it looks like a heart. 

Teacher's Reflection
The activity was great as the children had an experiential experience of seeing plants in their 'backyard' and observed a wide variety of plants. Even within the same species, they observed the leaves of the plant were of different shades of colour and sizes. They were also able to record the changes which they observed during the week.

The scientific process skills are predicting, observing and recording as well as communicating their discoveries. 

Timothy: Will anything happen to the Bag B like the paper will get wet and the veggie will rot?

Lara: The vegetables will turn bad I think.

Regan: This paper will be smaller?

1 week later....

Gideon: Yucks! These 2 bags are disgusting. (Bag B and Bag 2)

Zayden: How did the veggies just become juice? Is it because of the paper?

Rais: Next time Bag C will also become like Bag B but need longer time I think.

Children developed a sense of wonder and curiosity as they learned about compost and observed the changes that took place.

Teacher's reflection
I predicted that it will take longer for the compost to have any significant changes. However, I was also surprised at the rate of changes especially for the vegetable scraps even though I used mostly the stem parts of the leafy vegetables.

Hailey: The food waste smells bad. What would compost smell like?
Kaelen: How will the cardboard in the bottle break down?
Acacia: Will insects and creepy crawlies live in it?

Learning Disposition:
Children develop a sense of appreciation as they have picked up/taken from nature when they collected leaves. The compost is a gesture to return to the garden and preserve it for others to enjoy. 

Teacher's Reflection:
From an info video on how compost was made, the children managed to catch the message of giving back to nature. It made the experience an even greater meaning for them to look forward as a form of grattitude.
