Steve can feel the pain that his mom feels, and he hates to see the face of his father in pure sadness. Sometimes we don’t realize just how important our parents are in our lives, and how much we care about them. There were a few times that my mom got so upset about arguments we were having, that in certain cases, she would start crying. When that would happen, I would feel so much pain, because I never want to see my parents cry because of me, I love them too much. Seeing his parents in deep misery makes him seem to be in more denial about his situation. Steve still thinks he is not guilty. As the readers, it is hard to come to a conclusion about Steve being guilty or not, because he seems shocked and traumatized about the crime, which doesn’t give any concrete clues. In part three of the book, we learn about Steve being handcuffed by detectives O’Brien and Williams. This event was confusing for Mrs.Harmon, because the detectives said they only needed to ask Steve questions, yet they were handcuffing him. For the first time in the book, Steve admits to being in the drugstore during the crime. During the continuation of the trial, we have huge impacts brought to the table. Lorelle Henry, a witness, says she remembers seeing King during the robbery. In addition to that, Bobo Evans admits to having a “connection ” with both suspects (King and Harmon). He says that him and King planned the robbery, and that Steve was supposed to be a lookout.
