He has lived off the grid in Appalachia for over 50 years. He chose to move because he wanted “a better life.” He was worried that his life in the city was not going to last. After a stint in the Peace Corps, living with a Borneo tribe, he moved back to the states and experienced a significant amount of reverse culture shock. He was overwhelmed with the “glut of stuff” and experienced overwhelming sensations even entering a mall. He reflected on his time with the tribal group he lived with in Borneo and felt that they were “happier than people in America with so little.” Joe embodied a mentality that was considered counterculture in the 1960’s when he first decided to move. Later in the video he mentions how living off the grid has become more normalized. He thinks this was influenced by the “back to the land” movement that started in the 1960’s. He wants to promote this lifestyle to “bring back community” and to stop replacing people with material things. Joe is an example of someone who was rejecting things in his environment that didn’t suit his ideals. He was drawn to a counterculture that better aligned with his values and this was solidified by his time in Borneo and his experience with reverse culture shock when he returned.

Attached is an article that examines a sample of American adolescents’ experience of the COVID-19 pandemic through the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s theory. The authors clearly take a person-in-environment approach, as they argue that we cannot fully understand and work effectively to improve adolescent mental health in the wake of this pandemic without considering factors outside of their microsystems. I found the article to be both relevant and a good example of the importance of considering mezzo- and macro- level factors and their effects on people’s life experiences.
