Culture Shock

Culture Shock can be described as the idea that when someone encounters a different culture, one can often feel discomfort or frustration. This picture was taken of me (in the middle) and two of my friends at one of the world's most iconic landmarks, located 5,500 miles away from Sacramento. Us being Sacramento-native young men, we were unanimously uncomfortable upon our arrival in Paris due to the visible differences in the environment we found ourselves in. The people around us all dressed different than us, they all spoke different languages, and had different hobbies, making it seem like we were out of place.

It is in human nature to form groups and values based on common beliefs. There are different types of culture, however, culture can be best summarized as "common habits and behaviors..." (3.1) that are formed when people live together to "[help] people feel secure and “normal."" (3.1). In other words, culture is the collective ideas, beliefs, and values people share. In this photo from a 2017 print of Life magazine, a group of similar dressed individuals place their gaze on a camera, displaying their exclusivity to their group. These young people all display similar behavior and style, exemplifiying the idea that Culture often brings people together.

Privilege

In our society, one's quality of life is largely determined by the color of their skin and/or their social class. For example, in 2017, the median household income for African Americans was $40,258 compared to the $68,145 annual income for White Americans in the United states. While money may not directly buy happiness, money does buy health insurance, food, bills, and many other luxuries that can increase the quality of someone's life. The access to these luxuries is an example of the idea of "privilege". This photo of me last summer on the top of a cruise ship demonstrates the idea of privilege since I was financially privileged enough to afford to go on the vacation. Other types of privilege such as male privilege and white privilege also contribute to me living a more luxurious life than a lot of other people, unfortunately.

Socialization

Socialization is the process in which people discover what is "right" or "wrong" through interactions with other people in a community. This is essential to humans because it is how we form beliefs and values. However, because of this, the community in which people are raised in have significant impact on their identity. This is a photo I have in my house of a Soviet Union propaganda poster made during the Space Race during the mid-late 20th century. Propaganda is an example of how one's community can affect their beliefs because it is commonly used by governments to spread certain beliefs or ideas throughout a community.

Since the beginning of our existence, humans have lived in groups and tend to form communities. An in-group refers to the group of people that an individual feels is a big part of their identity and where they truly belong. This is a photo of me and my in-group on vacation last summer in Rosarito, Mexico. This group of friends are the people I have the most trust and comfort because of the amount of time we've spent together and how similiar we all are to each other.

Glass Ceiling

In our country, the average woman makes around 80% of the annual salary of the average man. The glass ceiling refers to the non-visible barrier that women face in becoming successful in their careers due to common gender-based discrimination that falsely labels women as less capable than men in different ways. This is a photo of my girlfriend along with some of her coworkers at her job. Unfortunately, all of these women will most likely face this glass ceiling barrier in their careers due to our society's popular misogynistic views (especially in the workplace) that hurt the financial potential for many women.

There are more than 2 million people who are nonbinary in the United States and they often face discrimnination and cruel judgement from people who strongly believe that gender is a part of our nature. Gender can be described as a continuum in which varying combinations of male and female physical attributes can be demonstrated by one person. This is a photo of my girlfriend and her nonbinary friend, Liv. It is very important to the millions of nonbinary people in the United States that gender nor pronouns should never be assumed because it could be extremely demoralizing to the other person.

Nurture can be described as the external resources, care, and priviliege one has in their life that impacts their self-development. For example, a cat that is born feral does not have access to antibiotics/vaccines that can protect them from harmful diseases while a cat that is kept as a pet may have access to those resources with proper care. This is a photo of my girlfriend and my Boston Terrier, Gretta. Since Gretta can be fed proper food, has access to medicine, and has a roof over her head, she has a lot better chance of survival than if she was on her own.

Material Culture are the physical representations of these beliefs or ideas that can be anything from clothing accessories to buildings and stores. This photo was taken at Dominican University, where multiple religious statues and churches can be found. These statues and buildings represent catholic ideas and beliefs and hold significant value for their community.

The phrase "You are who you are" is often used to explain why people act a certain way. Nature can be defined as the influence of one's genetic makeup on their development. This is a photo from a magazine showing a married couple and ther baby. While other factors may play into the development of this child's behaviors and beliefs, the child will also have some behaviors and beliefs that derive from their genetics or hormones.
