THE ROMAN GLADIETORS' DIET (Anna Menegatti Eleonora Andreozzi
vedi allegato)

We know about the gladiators’ diet because of the evidence that the archeologists found in the ancient Roman cities, such as books, portraits and also the resarches using the spectroscopy to examine bones and human waste. But some scientists found two body and after many studies they discovered that them had a different pattern, revealing a diet much higher in animal protein and lower in beans and pulses. This means there were gladiators originally from other parts of the Roman empire who had a different type of diet.

| |

First of all gladiators were spacially slaves, prisoners of war, condemned criminals but also disperately poor who wanted to risk their own death for food. The gladiators recived medical treatment, food and training to improve the results of the show in the arenas. Who survived for many years got better treatment and extra privileges, for example the gladiators who before were criminals after trhee or five years of fighting got freedom.

About food, they ate a vegetarian diet in particular they ate cereals, vegetables and dried fruit. They needed a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fats and proteins to assure a successfull athletics performance. They also drank a drink made from plant ashes, that helped them to firtify the body after fighting and physical exertion, and they drank an onion juice to firm up the muscles. Gladiators were called “barely eaters” becuse they ate lower-quality of grain than other people.

Now we will talk about daily intake of calories, fiber, fat, sugars, carbohidrates in the roman diet. The caracteristic of the roman diet was the very high quantity of calories, infact we saw that the daily caloric intake of a roman soldier was between 3500-6348 calories that today are too much. We have to consider that they had to spend a lot of energy for battle and move around places. to be ready for the battle they ate meat, fish, grains, wine, sugars, a lot of vegetables founded in a research in hercoleum

A high-calorie diet was essential for Roman soldiers, who needed a lot of energy in their bodies because they had to fight. Usually when they were on the battlefield they expended about 6,000 calories. When Soldiers did manual labor they had to eat like normal people because their expenditure was the same of others.
Gianna e Roberta

They have been referred to as “ barley eater” and “hordearii”. All gladiators' consumed plants including wheat and barley as staple food. They had also a kind of energy drink made with vinegar and plant ash drink. Despite they needed to introduce calcium, they didn't take it because they were normally poor so they didn't have money to buy it.
In our opinion roman soldiers' ate more meat because gladiators' were normally slaves, prisoners of war, condemned criminals or the desperately poor who were willing to risk death for food.
Another consideration we had is that the roman soldiers' had a better diet because for their job they needed substantial food but gladiators' can't afford this type of meal because they were often poor.

What could we conclude about the roman diet?

Sofia Avanzini

Common people had a basic diet based on bread, fruit ,cheese, honey and olives. From an ancient sewer below the town of Herculaneum the archaeologists found that the Romans ate a lot of vegetables. For the Ientaculum children had normally bread and milk. Women and workers, instead, could eat different things like bread and fics, bread with salt oil vinegar, bread with sweet wine. For the Prandium they ate hot foood in winter and fresh food in summer bought outside; workers often ate standing because they had usually to work at the time of the Prandium. A normal Prandium was based on bread, cold meat, fish, legums, eggs and wine (sometimes they drank Mulsus, that is a drink of wine and honey). The Caena could be based on soup of legums, milk, cheese, fresh fruit and lard. For the people who were in the lower class it was usually based on bread, cheese and meat.

The diet was different for soldiers. Roman soldiers needed an high-calorie diet because they expended 6.000 calories daily when they were fighting. They had their rations of food, that met their basic needs and were disigned to keep them fit for the battle. When not battling they had however training activities and manual labor. The soldier ration (grains, used to make porridge, soup and pasta, meat, that was boiled or roasted, cheese, salt, wine, fruit, honey to sweeting dishes,) was integrated with foods from inhabitants of surrounding villages or by hunting.

Gladiatores ate primarily vegetarian diets and meat-free meals. Their own diet included beans, grains (of an inferior quality), wheat, barley, oatmeal and dried fruit and some of these meals were washed down with a vinegar and plant ash drink to give them energy, to fortify the body after physical exertion and to promote better bone healing. From some bone analyses we discovered that were signs of calcium deprivation.

I think that the soldier's diet was healthy. The cooking method used by soldiers for the meat are recognized today as healthy alternatives to frying. The use of cheese in their diet is very important because it is a source of fat : insufficient fat consumption would increase the risk for developing an illness and dying. Roman soldiers used salt to preserve meat and fish preventing them from developing a food-bourne illness. Wine was used not only as a drink but also for medicinal purposes in army's hospital. Romans soldiers had a healthy diet with their high carbohydrate content (about 78% of their total intake) suitable to replenish the energy stores in relation to their lifestyle.

THE ROMAN SOLDIER'S DIET

A Roman soldier was a citizen enlisted in the ranks of the army, to defend their own homeland. The following years he becomes a professional soldier. The State paid a salary to each soldier and gave them all the equipment and food. Another source of food in the army were contributions from friends and family members. The archaeologists have found many letters about the contributions of food from the families to the soldiers. In fact, this is where many of the information about the soldier’s diet comes from. The Roman soldiers needed a high-calorie diet. When they were fighting in war, they expended approximately 6000 calories. His daily food ration met his basic needs and was designed to keep him fit for battle, more specifically they ate grains, meat, cheese, salt and other minerals, wine and fruit. They ate lots of types of grain like corn, wheat and barley; these was used to make bread, porridge, soup and pasta. Meat provided the soldier with protein and iron. They received a ration of bacon, pork, beef, veal, venison and mutton. The meat was also roasted or boiled. Cheese was a mainstay of the roman soldier’s diet. The milk was made from cows, sheep or goats. The Roman soldier’s received a ration of salt which he used to preserved meat and fish but the Roman soldier used to eat unsalted food. Wine was part of the diet. Soldiers typically drank a vinegary wine. They often added water to the wine. The Roman soldiers eat a lot of fruit for example apples , cherries, peaches, plums and different type of nuts. To sweeten dishes they used honey. We think that they had a balanced diet composed by lots of protein, iron and sugars and it was necessary for fighting.
De Vittorio Martina-Di Cicco Giulia

Cecilia Seneci - Beatrice Benolli

Roman soldiers' calories consumption was very high, for example during a battle they could need between 3000 and 6000 calories per day. It was an important factor to keep them fit.
They used to grow wheat from which they obtained pasta, soup and bread.
However in their diet the meat was privileged; above all bacon, beef, veal, venison and mutton.
Cheese was an other important nourishment as a big source of fat, very useful during conflicts.
Salt was used to store fresh food and so it prevented them to catch diseases when they had to consume meat.
Even if it sounds weird, wine was an important factor in their diet since it was used as a medicine. They weren't picky since the wine was usually vinegary.
Food and drinks were important to decide where to build a campsite. Romans appreciated above all cherries, apples, peaches, plums nuts, walnuts, chestnuts and hazelnuts, beans and lentils. They used a lot of honey, too. Even though the list of food is very wide, we have to take in account that ancient manuscripts were written by the high society and therefore couldn't reflect the daily life of a normal person.

Now we will talk about daily intake of calories, fiber, fat, sugars, carbohydrates in the roman diet. The caracteristic of the roman diet was the very high quantity of calories, infact we saw that the daily caloric intake of a roman soldier was between 3500-6348 calories that today are too much. We have to consider that they had to spend a lot of energy for battle and move around places. For being ready for the battle they usually ate meat, fish, grains, wine and sugars. In a research in Herculaneum scientists founded that roman's ate a lot of vegetables too

The Ancient Romans ate food they could grow like vegetables or cereals. They also ate meat from birds and animals. They imported food from all over the empire. They used to eat three meals a day: -ientaculum (breakfast)-prandium (lunch)-cena (dinner)At the first meal (ientaculum) they ate bread, cheese, milk, honey, fruit and dried fruit. A typical kind of ientaculum was bread with figs or bread with milk for the children. At lunch (prandium) they had a fast meal with bread, fresh meat, fish, legumes, eggs, fruit. They drank wine or mulsum that was wine mixed with honey. They used to take food from the peddlers or after the baths because they had to go to work.Dinner was the most important meal of the day. It began at 16 p.m. and during festive days it continue till the sunrise. They ate legumes soup, milk, dried and fresh fruit, lard and dairy products. Later they started to use bread and meat, also the poors. If there were guests the meal was called convivium, with gustum (apetizers), caput cenae (meals) and mensa secunda (desserts).

Silvia Meghi - Cristina FarnedaThe roman soldiers' instead of the roman gladiators' ate lot of meat because they had to take calories. They ate different types of meat especially bacon, but also beef, veal, venison and mutton. The meat was often boiled or roasted. They used this two methods because those were more healthy than frying.Gladiators' ate especially vegetables, their own diet included beans, grains, and dried fruit.
