Did women get any support from international?

Originally, the union did not support the women strikers. Employers had always use divisive tactics to keep male workers from supporting an increase in women's pay. The women of Dagenham claimed that union leaders were unworried about losing 187 women's union dues out of thousands of workers. They continued, and were joined by 195 more women from another Ford plant in England.

The Dagenham strike came to an end after Secretary of State for Employment Barbara Castle met with the strikers and took up their cause of getting them back to work. The women were fairly compensated, but the re-grading issue was not resolved until years later, after another strike. They were finally classified as skilled workers in 1984.

The first effect of the Equal Pay Act of 1970 was the elimination of separate lower women's pay rates. Just before to 1970, it was common in the private sector and some parts of the public sector to have separate, and lower, women's pay rates. For example, prior to the introduction of a new pay structure in 1967, there were four grades for production workers at Ford Motor Company.
