Musical Literacy

In order to attain musical literacy, you need to be aware and fluent in the technical, mathematical, and interpretive elements found in all musical compositions. The compositional techniques and theory found in music are extremely technical, and have a large amount of foreign terms that apply to specific parts of the piece, which might be considered technical for people who do not understand some terms. For example, "forte" (abbreviated to "f" and pronounced "four-tay" means to play loud, and "ritardando", (often abbreviated to "rit/ritard" and pronounced "retard-ando") means to go slow. Another literacy is mathematics. Mathematics is used in order to correctly determine the length of notes and the amount of time in which they should be played in at the correct tempo. This can change depending upon time signature (a way that musicians know how long to hold notes). For example, some notes can be held shorter than others based upon their values and the time signature! Certain elements applied to the music at the composer and performer's discretion. Interpretive elements are also incredibly fundamental to musical performance. Adding dynamics, ornamentation, and a generally original rendition (for example, slowing down at the end) of a piece adds character to a composition not found on the sheet music. The vocabulary of music adds to the technical aspect, note length to the mathematical aspect, and musical expression to the interpretive aspect!

The musical community is unique in that, like all other art forms, transcends the written and spoken language. At its heart, despite the technical terms, music is universal, and brings together people, especially when playing in a band. Music is a way to express yourself, and it gives you an opportunity to bond with other people you might not have met otherwise.

Human Geography, like many other social sciences, has its own set of complex terminologies, which make it quite a technical literacy to understand. Just like in any discipline, terms that are unfamiliar to the general audience may seem quite technical, as their many definitions are fundamental building blocks to the subject. For example, space-time compression is the lessening of impact as something spreads from its hearth. It is also a logical literacy too. It is a logical literacy because it requires one to think of cause and effect, and how things affect each other from halfway across the world and from right next door. It also requires one to understand why people would react to a certain outside pressure, whether it be political upheaval, environmental difficulty, and other social pressures. The vocabulary makes up the technical aspect of the literacy, while the relationships between people and their environment create a logical literacy, as it needs people to understand how people coexist with one another with the added pressures of today's world!

What I like about this community is that, as an AP class, I can always have interesting conversations with the people in it and the teacher. People really bonded over the subject and it's such an interesting class to take because it is incredibly relevant to today, as the concepts span over time.

These communities don’t overlap in content, but they have similar technical challenges in their own languages and their own complex sets of rules and terminology. Even though music and APHUG have nothing in common as far as curriculum go, they require the same skill sets to learn.
