The film had huge controversies around it due to its subject matter and handleing which lead  to it be banned in countries like Singapore and the Philippines. A lot of religious groups also came out against the film for its dipiction of Jesus Christ in the film. It got so extream in some cases Movie Theaters that showed the movie where fire bombed.

A lot of parents were even issued letters from schools about the Netflix series. Netflix received the most criticism for the season 1 finale which showed scenes of a teen committing suicide, these scenes have since been deleted. The show also received huge amounts of criticism over a scene in season two which was immediately removed after causing a controversy.

There has also been controversy over the fact a white actress played a black character.
