I was lucky enough to be able to travel to Burma, also known as Myanmar, back in March of 2018. Our trip was all about travelling to the start of the Burma-Thailand Railway line also known as the Death Railway starting in Mawlamyine. The Japanese and Koreans ruled Burma during the 2nd world war and used prisoners of war to construct the railway. As stated in the article from the Australian War Memorial (Australian War Memorial, 2016) the railway was completed on the 16th of October 1943. Which took twelve months to build with many people losing their lives due to bad treatment of being overworked, malnutrition and many other diseases.

Reference:

Australian War Memorial.

As stated in the refugee health guide (Refugeehealthguide,. 2018) refugees travelling to Australia would be screened for many different diseases including: collection of immunisation history of certain diseases of Tuberculosis, Malaria, hepatitis and coming into contact with these diseases. Chronic non-communicable illnesses like respiratory disorders due to the larger population of smokers, heart disease due to unhealthy diets of fried food. Lifestyle risks would all be assessed. (Refugeehealthguide.org.au/Referrals/Western-Australia/, n.d.) Any health issues from refugee would put extra strain on our health system. So to try and alleviate as much as possible is detrimental to Australia's already strained health system.

References

(Refugeehealthguide.org.au/Referrals/Western-Australia/, n.d.)

Image of mosquito padlet.com

Australia is a country where many refugees and migrants want to escape to for a better life (Discrimination and Disadvantage Experienced by People in Small and Emerging Communities, 1999) due to political unrest and violence of war. On the international stage Australia promotes social determinants to all people regardless of their culture. As stated by (Ragusa, 2014) Burmese people find when arriving in Australia they struggle to find services like,

· Interpreters

· Affordable housing and education

· Employment

· Health services (Ragusa, 2014)

As many are sent to country communities where services are limited, being isolated and not feeling accepted into society (Ragusa, 2014) can play a big role on one’s mental health and wellbeing (World Health Organization, 2024)

reference:

Discrimination and disadvantage experienced by people in small and emerging communities.

Clinical Expert - Standard 1.2

For me the most significant way I can conduct myself, while working with people from migrant and refugee backgrounds would be to utilise standard 1.2 (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice, 2019). By recognising the traumatic stress and experiences, (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice., 2019) my patient has endured, this will help me to grow and develop my understandings of individual cultural needs (Culturally Responsive Clinical Practice, 2019). During assessments, by recognising various conditions, documenting and coming up with the best plan of action together, for treatment will help me to gain more confidence and understanding on how to develop these skills while addressing treatment plans and ongoing care. I would be careful, not to make assumptions of my patients, I would listen to their storey and modify my approach.

reference:

Redirecting.

When addressing Burmese people, it is respectful to address males as 'U', women as 'DAW' and 'Saya' for a doctor or teacher. (Cultural Atlas, 2024). To leave your shoes lying around and upside down will bring you bad luck as quoted in the article (Cultural Atlas, 2024) It is considered very disrespectful to touch another person’s head unless you have permission during a medical examination or hair cutting for monk ceremony. When sitting the soles of your feet should not be pointing at anyone (Cultural Atlas, 2024) and to point one’s finger or making gestures would be insulting. Customs should not be judged; cultural respect will stand anyone in good stead.

Reference:

Cultural Atlas. (2024). Home.

The Burmese people mainly practice Buddhism so they believe in good and bad events which can contribute to aspects of one’s ongoing health. They believe health is controlled by the four elements of earth, water, air and fire. (Queensland Health, 2019) By having the right balance of the elements, this will contribute to one being healthy along with massage, herbal remedies and adjustments to one’s nutritional diet can also restore balance and harmony to the body. Rice is consumed with every meal as it is closely connected to life itself. (Queensland Health, 2019) Health can be described as hot or cold which requires the opposite treatment in food or medicines.
