         <description><![CDATA[<div>In 1482 Diogo Cao became the first European to visit the Congo. The Portuguese set up ties with the Kongo. In the 16th and 17th centuries the British, Dutch, Portugese, and French Merchants began to engage in slave trade in the Kongo intermediaries.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Most of the Congo is in a very humid and tropical climatic region. It lies five degrees north and south of the Equator. The southern and far north part of the Congo are somewhat drier climates. In July and August a maximum of the precipitation occurs in the north; it then shifts into the central Congo during September and October.
