The Bwa masks were affected by colonial conquest because

They gained new purpose and tradition when the Bwa were targets of the slave trade

They are now representative of the Bwa's history during slavery

They are used now in celebration of the Bwa’s independence

I chose to use the Bwa masks because their history is intertwined with slavery which was a significant portion of global history. Since Burkina has achieved its independence the masks also represent how culture and tradition can live past adversity into better times.

The first page of the Codex Mendoza was was affected by colonial conquest because

Destruction of Aztec books during Spanish conquest led to its creation

Cannot be used in tandem with older books to show Aztec culture and history. It is instead a new starting point for Aztec literature.

Depicts only an idealized version of the city of Tenochtitlan

I chose to include this piece on the map because it itself is like an idealized map. Its existence also proves that the history of Aztec can continue even after the Spanish conquest.

The Sioux Baby Carrier was affected by colonial conquest because

The style of the baby carrier was caused by European settlers forcing eastern woodlands peoples westward.

The baby carrier itself may have been inspired by the shelter and clothing that was introduced by Spanish explorers

I chose to include this on the map because I think for the time period it was created in, the artwork and craftsmanship on the baby carrier is extremely well done. When thinking about historical quillwork, this piece should come to mind.

The Hide Painting was affected by colonial conquest because

The hide was apart of the buffalo that were being hunted and killed in mass by Euro-Americans

Its depicting a war that was fought over land control by Euro-American colonists and the Native American Sioux tribe

I chose this because it symbolizes a fight for both Native American freedom. Having the painting be on buffalo hide is also significant as they would be killed off later on by colonial advancements in North America.
