Sky Greens is the world’s first low carbon, hydraulic water-driven vertical farm that integrates green urban solutions to use minimal land, water and energy resources. Sky Greens produces tropical leafy vegetables that are harvested fresh daily. It is a place where continuous innovation and creating solutions takes place to increase production efficiency while minimizing waste. Sky Greens aims to be the top dog in providing solutions to sustainable and green urban agriculture through finding ways to minimize the damage done to the environment, increase productivity of these farms, and integrating these solutions into urban living.

Eventually, he signed an agreement with the AVA in April 2010 to form a collaboration to develop the very first low carbon footprint vertical farming system. With the initial trial being of great success, commercial operation finally begin in 2012.

Sky Greens uses a vertical farming system that consist of rotating tiers of growing troughs mounted on a A-shape aluminium frame. This type of vertical farming brings about various advantages. Firstly, it allows for high yield of crops since the system intensifies land use and thus results in at least 10 times more yield per unit land area. The crops produced would also be of high quality since the structures are housed in controlled environments allowing for stringent control of input materials, bringing about food supply, food safety, food security and food quality assurances.

Sky Greens has indeed taken a huge step towards helping Singapore, a land scarce city state achieve food supply resilience as the Sky Greens vertical farm is able to produce 10 times more yield compared to the other conventional farms in Singapore. While not only do they manage to produce so much more output, they also do it in a highly efficient manner, reducing the use of water by 95%, 75% less labour and 75% less input. This is achieved by calculating the requirements of the plants as well as reducing the wastage as there is no water loss due to water run off in the system.

Vertical Farming allows for high flexibility since the aluminium structures are highly customisable and so can be made to suit different crops, growing media and natural conditions, allowing cultivation on originally non-arable lands. This also means that the vertical farm can be built over reservoirs, lakes and rivers or infertile land. The farm can also be sited within an urban or peri-urban location, reducing logistic costs, wastage and carbon footprint as well as having lower food miles. The system also allows for low energy use as the harnessing of natural sunlight means there is not need for artificial lighting.

Why is Vertical Farming Good?

Vertical farming reduces the need for pesticides, by preventing pests from entering or spreading in the farm. Since the plants are grown in a greenhouse, airborne and landborne pests such as insects and rodents cannot enter the growing area and feed on the plants. The vertical arrangement and separation of the planter beds also prevent landborne and soil-borne pests, such as insects, worms and fungi, from spreading between plants. However, the humidity in the greenhouses create a favourable environment for fungi to thrive. For this, vinegar is sprayed on plants as a fungicide, a cheap and organic way to prevent fungal infections.

Rotation of the growing troughs is powered by a hydraulic water-driven system which uses the momentum of flowing water and gravity. Only 40W of electricity is required to power one massive 9 metres tower. There is also low water usage since the crops are irrigated and fertilised using a flooding method so no sprinkler system is required, reducing electricity wastage and water wastage due to run-offs. Only 0.5 litres of water is required to rotate each structure and the water is recycled and reused.

Rainwater collected in ponds is directed into the patented Water Pulley System which utilises momentum of flowing water and gravity to rotate the layer. It takes around 16 hours for 1 cycle, but valve can be manually adjusted according to weather conditions. Layers of planter boxes are lowered down to water trays where soil absorbs water (which is from the hydraulic system). 1 pump is able to power multiple towers and each tower is 9m tall with a base of 3m by 1.7m.

Before the trip, we some prior knowledge of what vertical farming was. However, on the day of our visit, we were blown away by how much innovation was needed to develop such an advanced and intricate system such as the one used by Sky Greens. For example, the rotation of the towers makes use of a hydraulic pulley system to cut down on energy costs and the level at which the plants are harvested is extremely ergonomic such that the farmers do not have to use a ladder or bend their back to harvest the vegetables. We also appreciate how they try their best to be as efficient and as environmentally friendly as possible by reusing, reducing and recycling. It also gives us hope that interdisciplinary research is crucial for innovation, like how physics concepts are incorporated into Sky Greens architecture. We were only exposed to other methods such as hydroponics before, however, this trip showed us the wonders of vertical farming and we are grateful for that! We believe that with more emphasis on innovation and environmentally friendly technology in Singapore, vertical farming will soon become the main source of vegetables for Singaporeans! We will become self sufficient and less reliant on other countries which is extremely reassuring!
