Question 1: What is the poem’s tone? Which words reveal this tone? Is the poem ironic?

The tone of the poem is happiness, how everyone in America seems to be singing happy tunes. In the text, Whitman wrote how "Those of mechanics, each one singing his as it should be blithe and strong," and how "The carpenter singing his as he measures his plank or beam". Walt is describing a mechanic and carpenter as doing their everyday work; singing and enjoy their time. This reveals the tone of how everyone is happy and singing.

Question 4: What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

Throughout the poem, Walt would repeat the word singing a lot from stanza to stanza. For instgance, Walt Whitman wrote, "The mason singing his as he makes ready for work, or leaves off work, The boatman singing what belongs to him in his boat, the deckhand singing on the steamboat deck". He repeats singing and making it into a happy and vibrant vibe. This adds on to his happy tone and saying how everyone is happy.

3. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

Whitman creates images of many different people to portray the joyful and vibrant tone of the poem. He writes about how various people are singing, including "The delicious singing of the mother, or the young wife at work, or of the girl sewing or washing." These people are completely unrelated to each-other, but the image of them all singing brings them together. This pattern is the central motif of the poem, and it represents the brotherhood of America.

6. What is the theme (the central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

This poem expresses a strong theme about America. At the end of the poem, there is "the party of young fellows, robust, friendly, singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs." This quote shows how people of diverse backgrounds, like carpenters, mechanics, shoemakers, and mothers, all come together to sing their powerful song. It is a poem about the unity, equality, and freedom of all citizens in America.

Whitman wrote the poem in 1680, right before the Civil War. He believed that everyone mentioned is there to build America up and trust their democracy. During his life, Whitman discussed many controversial topics, one of the being women's rights. This ties back to the poem because he purposely included women to show equality that he wanted in America.
