A little bit later in the book Jessie's mom tells her that it really isn't 1840, it is really 1996 on the outside of Clifton. Jessie was confused and scared, but "Ma" told her that there really is medicine for all the sick kids, but the people outside Clifton won't give them the medicine and won't let them leave Clifton when ever they want anymore. Then people started getting sick from a disease called diphtheria. So Jessie's mom has her leave Clifton so she can find a person named Mr.Neeley. Jessie leaves Clifton and joins a class's field trip to see Clifton. She escapes from it and sleeps in a bathroom. The next day she left the bathroom to start looking for a telephone. After a while she ends up behind a bush trying to sneak into a bread truck. Once she is in the truck started to move. Then she accidentally opens the latch and the bread and bread racks started falling out and she ran from the truck into bushes. Once a car and the truck leaves she starts walking to find the phone again. She finds a river and a guy tells her it is poison and that she can go to a gas station for a drink and a phone. He offers her to go in his house but she says no. Once she finds the gas station she goes inside and buys a drink of water then she asks the cashier where the phone is at.
