The 3 Bielski Brothers lived in a town known as Stankiewicze. The entire family worked on a farm working the mills. Their parents were murdered along with 5,000 other people when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1939. On top of that, Germans started placing many Jews in ghettos and saving them from the ghettos was the brothers’ mission. The Germans killed the brothers’ parents as well as two of their other brothers. The brothers fled with some family members and created the foundation of a partisan. In 1942, Asael and Zus escaped the Germans by hiding in the woods and later Tuvia joined them in the spring.

Under Tuvia’s rulership the 3 brothers created a secret village in the woods to hide themselves as well as other Jews. The brothers were able to acquire firearms with the help of Jewish friends/helpers. The brothers first debated if they should shelter more than the friends and family they already saved. They eventually came to an agreement to save more than just people they knew in early 1942. The partisan group had allies with nearby neighbors as well as other distant allies that provided them guns and other artilleries.

By the end of the brother’s plan over 1,200 Jews were saved. Both Tuvia and Zus emigrated to Palestine in 1945 and Asael entered the Soviet Army and died in battle in the same year. The brothers’ collectively saved and protected 1,200 Jews in their time as village hosts. At the end of the war Tuvia died at 81, Asael died at 37, and Zus died at 82. These brothers were able to save many Jewish lives and without them many lives would have been lost over German rule.

His brother Asael was his deputy, while Zus was the head of reconnaissance. However, they had to resort to stealing food from peasants at some points in time. The village was attacked by the Germans in the summer of 1943 and the survivors were forced to flee further into the forest. A new camp was built and later the Red Army liberated the woods where the Jews were located.
