A man named Eckels ,who has had experience with hunting, decides to sign up for a safari to the past to hunt a T-Rex. However, it's not a piece of cake. There is a metal path you must stay on. If you happen to step off and kill anything, even the smallest insect, everything in the future may be affected. Eckels gets frightened by the dinosaur, stumbles back to the time machine, but kills a butterfly when he accidentally steps in dirt on the way back to the time machine. Everything in the future seems to be the same, but follow under a different language. Eckels is killed for his actions.

In paragraph 2, you see what is mentioned as a sign in bold letters that return in the story as almost the same. Except the words are spelled differently, due to Eckels' slip up by killing the butterfly in the past.

In paragraph 8, Eckels says "Thank God Keith won. He'll make a fine President of the United States." In paragraph 24, Travis says "That is the jungle of sixty two million two thousand and fifty-five years before President Keith." The mention of President Keith throughout the story foreshadows the change of events at the end of the story where Eckels killing the butterfly in the past resulted in a different president winning the election.

In paragraph 6, Eckels describing the time machine. It says "Eckels glanced across the vast office at a mass and tangle, a snaking and humming of wires and steel boxes, at an aurora that flickered now orange, now silver, now blue" The author is using the words to describe the complexity of the time machine, and to put an image into the readers' head.

In paragraph 65, the author describes the T-Rex to show it's intimidation towards the protagonist. It says "It towered thirty feet above half of the trees, a great evil god, folding its delicate watchmaker's claws close to its oily reptilian chest." These details show the state of fear in Eckels.

We learn that Eckels is cocky, overconfident. In paragraph 76, Eckels says "It was never like this before. I was always sure I'd come through alive. I had good guides...", showing that he was confident about what he was doing. This is indirect characterization.

Travis, the safari guide, also shows indirect characterization. At the end of the story, he lifts his rifle and shoots Eckels without hesitation due to him changing the future.

The "Sound of Thunder" in the title may represent two things that happened throughout the story. It can represent the loud sound of the T-Rex's footsteps, as well as the sound of the gunshot that killed Eckels at the end.

When Eckels and Travis arrive back in the present, they realize something is off. The language seems to be Germanic, and Keith didn't win the presidential election. On Eckels boot, he lifts a dead butterfly. The butterfly represents The Butterfly Effect, where minor things can cause major catastrophe or large differences. Because killing the one butterfly resulted in another candidate winning the Presidential Election.

Eckels seems confident at the beginning of the story, but he ends up cowering out when he sees the dinosaur. He is in deep regret for signing up to do the safari, and he wanted out as soon as he saw the T-Rex. Eckels has to put up with the fact that he messed up the future, and that it is irreversible. It really shows at the end of the story when he is trembling with the dead butterfly wishing he could fix what he did.
