Was a really close to home sort of book to read--the whole book focused on three students (Topher, Steve, and Brand) honoring their favorite teacher who is sick with cancer in the hospital. I really loved reading about the different details, reasons, and descriptions of the reasons they connected with their teacher, Ms. Bixby. Each student had a different experience--some saw her as a mother they never had or someone who saw them when others didn't. They described the quirky details of her, the things she said, the things she did. I tried and imagined some of the things that Ms. Bixby left with the students--thought of how it maybe related to my teaching experience, and reflectively think about how I want to reach my students in the future.

“Kids won’t just love this book. They need it.” —Soman Chainani, New York Times bestselling author of The School for Good and Evil

LOVED this book. I can still clearly remember the word "glimmering" from this book. It's integral to the beauty of the novel and the relationship made between an unlikely boy and a "garbage man." There is such a beautiful message that comes from this book--about how even things that seem like "trash" (whether that be literal items, or people), they can still be seen as beautiful--it depends on the perspective and outlook on things. The story begins with a boy named Arthur who throws a brick at the neighborhood "Junk Man." We learn the reason why he did so later in the later story, but Arthur is sentenced to community service with the "Junk Man" (who we later learn is named Mr. Hampton). Mr. Hampton leaves a list of seven different things that he wants Arthur to find and collect--ie: aluminum, light bulbs, etc. We later find out the significance of these seven important things, and what they mean to Mr. Hampton, and the reasoning behind it.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/saam.media/files/styles/max_1300x1300/s3/images/1970/1970.353.1-.116_9a.jpg?itok=Hq8USKBm
Lesson Plan: http://www.shelleypearsall.com/books/the-seventh-most-important-thing

One goal should focus on the frequency and duration of your reading, e.g., “I will increase my reading time by 25 minutes a week by reading an extra 5 minutes per day.”

I wanted to instead of doing small increments of reading, to try and just increase the time I read a few times a week. I think it would be more realistic to students in their reading workshop to have a longer time to read (potentially more than a few times a week), to allow for engagement and to really get into a book. I can remember times when I was younger when we were only given a short time to free-read and really didn’t like having to be stopped so soon.

Progress on Goal:
I found myself actually reading for longer periods of times in different points during the week. I began reading longer time periods when I figured that reading 5 minutes a day was not enough to get into the story.

One goal should focus on the type of reading you will be doing, e.g., “I will read the first two books in a popular series for this grade level.”

I really want to focus on reading books that are recommended by different establishments in Indiana—I want to know what the experts recommend. I will ask local librarians, as well as look at lists for “Indiana Young Hoosier” awards and nominees (for most of those books are actually recommended by students in the state) This is not only to get familiar with those books but to be aware of what is happening commonly around the state in regards to book choice.

Progress on Goal:
All of the books that I read were actually nominated for the Young Hoosier Book Nominee Awards. These nominees were by students so I was able to see what students were interested in reading.

One goal should focus on the thinking/record keeping you will be doing, e.g., “I will write a one-paragraph summary of each book I read.”

I will be logging my reading progress on Padlet, as well as writing a one-paragraph summary for each book. I’d also like to take note of the writing crafts.

Progress on Goal:
I enjoyed logging after each book that I read.

Feel free to add other types of goals based on your interests and areas of growth.

I want this to be purposeful. I am so excited to be getting to read for fun, to jump into the books that my students are reading. I hope to be able to give my students good recommendations for quality writing and stories for them-I aim for this project to do so.

Progress on Goal:
Since these books were Young Hoosier Book Nominees, I knew that I would be reading quality books with great craft.

This was a great book (partially based on real-life family experiences) about race issues in America. It is focused and set in the Segregated South. Young Stella is the main character and we begin our journey with her seeing a Ku Klux Klan meeting happening near her home. The book tackles this issue--and how a child deals with this sort of thing. The KKK is threatening to the Blacks of the town, and are inching closer and closer to them. The imagery and description of the feelings, emotions, and hardships faced by Blacks in this time period (and for that matter possibly today) really become poignant with the first-hand experiences. It gave me a different perspective--reading through this different lens. I think that it would be a great book for students with the furthering race issues, and seeing things from different perspectives.

This was the story about a foster child named Joseph Brook who moves in with a boy named Jack and his family. We learn that Joseph came from a Juvenile Prison for trying to kill a teacher. Joseph is distant, and barely talks to the family, but Jack makes an effort to connect with him. Jack constantly hears Joseph talking about "Jupiter" in his sleep, and finds out later from Joseph that Jupiter is his baby--a child in middle school. The story revolves around the quest for finding his daughter. This book was different than others--a little more "dark" in a way, but also as you get to know the characters, you can see them in a new way. I think I learned from this book that everybody has a story, and they deserve for that story to be heard before we just judge and assume things about them. It also made me see that things are still "significant" for those who are younger--that they have powerful emotions and feelings as well.

This book was different from all the other ones that I read. All of the other books were more realistic fiction, while Serafina and the Black Cloak was all into the world of Fantasy. I have missed reading books like this. The story begins with Serafina and her father--they secretly live in the basement of a place called the Biltmore Estate. No one knows. Then, one night, Serafina sees a man in a black cloak who is kidnapping kids from the estate and bringing them into the Forbidden Forest. She enlists the help of the nephew in the house, Braedon, to see who this man really is and why he is doing what he is doing. The book was thrilling--I wanted to continue to read and read until I could find out who the man was, and what would happen to Serafina. The fantasy aspect of it as well was a nice change in regards to craft and genre.

Overall, I was really happy about doing this project. I got to dive into the world of students that are reading these books and hopefully can be introduced to them at some point. I liked reading books that I knew had a great craft and were developmentally appropriate for students. Setting and making goals before I began the reading allowed me to have a base to head towards. Although I did not stick all the way to those goals, I found out what worked best for me. I found the process of documenting and tracking what I read to be helpful for myself, and helpful for quickly showing others for recommendations. I used different reader's tools during my reader as well--I took note of the different craft sentences in the books and took note of how the author did so. I was more concious of my reading and lesson plans that could come from them (with writing, etc).
