Why does the Author show multiple sides to the character?

In my book Stupid Fast the main character Felton is shown to have multiple sides or traits. He can be a jerk sometimes like when he tells his brother Andrew that "You're not that great at piano (Herbach 59)" when Andrew's passion is playing and practicing piano but felton can also be logical. He is seen logical in the book when he says things that really are true like "if people like you they will listen to you" where he is trying to prove his point of people don't really listen to him because he isn't very well liked.

What role do minor characters play?

In the book Stupid Fast the minor characters cause conflict in the story. For example a guy named Ken Johnson is always bullying Felton by calling him "squirrel nut" or "headcase". There's a part in the book where Felton says" Ken Johnson shoved me off my schwinn varsity, which he called my stupid bike because he said the brake handle scratched his car. (Herbach 7)” This shows Ken likes to bully Felton and it causes conflict in the story because Felton has to make certain decisions because of Ken.

Why does the author include stereotypes in the book? Are they intentional?

In my book Stupid Fast the author intentionally creates stereotypical characters to help the reader understand the characters more. For example the Bully Ken Johnson is a star athlete who was bigger than Felton before he grew but still bullied him no matter what. Then there is the characters Peter Yang who is the smart asian and we can infer this by his last name and also when he says “we’re going to go to the pool together-me and the debaters-to build team cohesion (Herbach 42).” Showing how him and the Debate club are going to the pool

What is the significance of a symbol in this book?

In the book there is a mound which is significant to the story because it symbolizes a place of comfort and memories for Felton. For example on page 185 Felton says "I'd go up there.. and being up there was the best home I ever had" where he is telling the reader that the mound was a place of safety where he could be himself. He went to the mound becuase of family issues at home
which were
-his mom was depressed and wouldnt leave bed
-His brother was turning crazy
-Ken Johnson and football were stressing him out
All of these issues reminded him of when he and his dad used to go up on the mound and his dad would run around while he watched and that was his best memory.

How does the Author use a craft technique to develop the theme?

In the book stupid fast the author uses internal thinking to develop a theme. The theme of the book is that people need to let things go and we see this in the book on many occasions. For example
-Felton blames his dad for how his life is
-The mom wont get out of bed because she is depressed
-the mom burns all of the dead dads stuff
All of these examples are shown by internal thinking because that's how the Felton the main characters talks to us. A big part in the story is when Felton says " “But why didn't i go in, Because i heard Jerri sobbing in there… She was totally sobbing (Herbach 194) telling us that the mom (Jerri) wont get out of bed and consistently cries.

The Dad and why he is the main cause of the conflict

The Dad in the story is the cause of the Main conflict. The Dad commits suicide when his kids (Felton and Andrew) are really young and leaves the mother who is also only in her early 20's at the time having to raise 2 kids by herself. He is the main cause of the conflict because he had many girlfriends over the town. He was a professor and the mom (Jerri) was his student at the time and they had a kid (Felton) but what Jerri did not realize is that she wasn't the only girlfriend the dad had. When Felton grows over the summer he gets big and doesn't know why people look at him differently until he see's a pic of his dad and realizes he looks exactly like him. Feltons mom and a couple of other people are freaked out by Felton because of his resemblance to the dad.

The Grandma is not present in the story for almost all the book but shows up at the end in an important role. When Jerri would not get out of bed Andrew and Felton finally make the decision to call her grandma who was believed to not care about them. It ends up the grandma knew this was going to happen and ends up flying to Buffalotton where they live and takes care of Andrew, Jerri, and Felton. She gets Jerri to see a doctor so she can feel better but also takes care of the kids. When she arrives she notices how much Felton looks like his dad and see's why Jerri is acting the way she is.
