Paul Gauguin he contracted dysentery and malaria, two common illnesses associated with his era and that location. Dysentery, an intestinal disorder, affects the colon and results in diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever. Gauguin was involved in a brawl. During the fight he broke his ankle. This injury plagued him for the rest of his life and resulted in him walking with a slight limp. He was constantly in pain, relying on pills to relieve the symptoms, and spending days in bed.  in Paris he contracted syphilis from a prostitute. this took a toll on his mental health. Weakened by excessive drinking, improper nourishment, and an overdose of morphine to treat the syphilis, Gauguin died of a heart attack at 54 years old on May 8th.

 

 

A passage in Munch’s diary dated January 22, 1892, and written in Nice, gives us a feeling of how  he might of felt when he did this painting. “I was walking along the road with two friends—the sun went down—I felt a gust of melancholy—suddenly the sky turned a bloody red. I stopped, leaned against the railing, tired to death—as the flaming skies hung like blood and sword over the blue-black fjord and the city—My friends went on—I stood there trembling with anxiety—and I felt a vast infinite scream [tear] through nature.” 

The figure on the bridge may even be symbolic of Munch himself he feels the cry of nature, a sound that is sensed within rather than listen to with the ears. Yet, how can this phenomenon be expressed in visual painting.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec  had Pycnodysostosis,  The syndrome is known as PYCD causes brittle bones, as well as abnormalities of the face, hands, and other parts of the body. a defect which prevents bone regrowth, making them fragile.  

To treat the syphilis, Goya used lotions made with mercury another poisonous ingredient. And many of the paints that he worked with daily contained lead. There were a lot of factors that may have impacted to Goya’s ill health.

These health problems led to a period of depression and weight loss but Goya continued to paint. Eventually, he became deaf, but his world of visual art continued. His earlier paintings were more realistic, but as his illnesses progressed, his art became more vivid and creative. His illness did not limit his skills; it only changed them.

Opinion is divided on why the painter was interested in skulls. During the period when most of these pictures were painted, Cezanne was clearly in a very depressed mood and obsessed with his own looming death. This is known from various letters he wrote and talks he had with his few friends. At the time, Cezanne had become quite isolated and suggested that he was finding life boring and pointless. Many experts think that his state of mind is revealed in the choice of subject matter.

However, there are others who think that Cezanne was inspired by the actual structure of skulls and point out the resemblances between the skull compositions and other still life works and self-portraits by the painter.

 

 Paul Cézanne had Myopia, a condition that makes distant objects to look blurry.   Cézanne never wore glasses and his minor condition can be appreciated in his paintings where long-range images look blurred. 

 I choose the 9 artists including Catherine McDonnell my classmate. they are all painter and all of them have physical or mental illnesses in common.
  My idea behind it is to show how people with illness in common, ither physically or mentally illness or both. We Can discover peace in creativity. I called it (Tools &symbols for wellbeign) they are fighting and have fought every day with illness and yet they have created masterpiece.  Been creative saved them brought them away from the pain and hurt they live with or lived with every day.  Many painters have suffered from medical diseases, which are reflected in their paintings. Below are 9 artists whose medical condition wasn't/are not an obstacle for their art, but a source of inspiration and creativity.
 I took the nine artist and made 4 collage out of the nine paintings. They are printed with colour ink onto fabric and I applique them onto fabric and sewed on top of them with free motion sewing machine on top. I printed positive words onto fabric and stitched them on. Each textile piece on its own means something first one is anxiety and positive symbol to help, the second one is depression and showing positive symbol to help. The third is physical illness or disability and showing how creativity can help, the fourth is doing different thing like a walk in the park may help you to heal.

 

   

Barry Frydlender uses digital technology to creates flawless scenes out of lots of photographs sometimes hundreds of them. . In the resulting images, patterns and people repeat, gradually. His scenes of roundabouts, cityscapes, beaches, and offices  have been inserted and overlapped, showing a increased world that is more detailed than our own. 

Frydlender was the first Israeli artist in 2007 to be given a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York with his exhibition “Place and Time,” displaying 10 large-scale photographs that took aim at modern-day policy in his local Israel.

 His work is in the  Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Jewish Museum in New York, and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art. 

 in all the previous work it shows  abstractly motivated practice, the flowers challenge typical differences among high and low art. They do unprofessional photography in both subject and style, the flower pictures use the technique of double exposure to achieve dizzying covered effects. The process allowed the artists to manipulate their shared styles. the artists spent countless hours detailing gardens and mushroom patches, thoughtfully crafting enchanting creations which took on an element of chance when layered in photographic double exposures.  One of them would shoot an entire roll of film in a housing rose garden.  the other one  would rewind it and then shoot the same roll in a park in Zurich. , carefully crafting powerful pieces which took on an element of chance when layered in photographic double exposures. The result is a mind-blowing portrait of berries, grasses, flowers, weeds and mushrooms in vivid, colour. causing several overlaid images
 these photographs push the limits of rightness of art. The effect of 111 different pictures, which can be fitted in a room like wallpaper, seen image by image or as in a print portfolio, or seen as a framed photograph, its  multi-coloured optical enjoyment.

The blue plastic wire represents a plastic polypropylene mesh that is used in medical surgery for stress incontinence and prolapse for women after having children. The whole in the plastic is to represents the them cutting into tissues while doing the procedure the big anchor needle is to represents the big anchor shaped needles  they use to do the procedure , its wrote in red to highlight the pain caused from this so called gold standard procedure . 

This device a  20 min operation has left women including myself with horrific chronic pain, its has eroded in muscle and organs and  recuring infections, Voiding, over active bladder, Sweeling, Inflammation, lower abdominal, pelvic, groin, buttocks, leg pain, poking, prickling sensations, spasms, and bleeding, the list goes on. Women cannot walk, sit, or stand without pain. Some women are lift needing aids wheelchair canes. It causes anxiety, depression, isolation and feeling overwhelmed.  We need proper health care; women lives have been destroyed enough in this country. 

 

 

I want to do the same flower 4 to 7 different ways. they will all be made from textile.

The flower is representing all the women from the mesh survivor Ireland. The flower meaning is beauty and strength, new beginnings.  it goes through different stages of growth comes back stronger then dies and comes back again each year. And blossoms stronger and stronger.

I am doing each flower different to represent each woman different experience with mesh we all had similar procedure that we have done with polypropylene mesh and we all have similar symptom but different disability and different stories. We are all the same, but we are all different. Were all in in it together but were all separate. 

I wanted to do flowers because all the women are beautiful, there some one mother, sister, wife partner, daughter, niece, and aunty. 

I like the finial piece to tell a story.

Going to Photograph some of flowers. Or take ideas from different patterning fabrics i.e. dresses bedclothing curtaining etc. 

 I might abstract them on photoshop then Print them from the computer on to fabric. 

 I might print from lino print of the flower onto fabric and stitch into it,

Fabric manipulation I want to do heated and stitched textile flower. Using chiffon Tyvek and felt and stitch

 I want to paint flower onto fabric and stitch over using fabric paint or acrylic paint water down 

 I want to do Collage/applique of the flowers on fabric and stitch. Use some of the printed fabric to collage it and some mixed fabric to applique using fusible fabric or fabric glue and stitch it in place.

I Might join them together as wall hanging or wearable piece or do them as separated pieces of soft home furnishing, but they will all match.

Maybe Cushions or pillows, textile painting, 3-dimensional textile flower to place in vase or to fall from the ceiling, to represent mother is the hearth of the home and most of these women are mothers. Mother makes a house a home.  

 Title ideas:  Together but separated          same but different       mothers make a house a home 

 

Some artist I’m going to research. Franz Erhard Walter, Jill King, Ruth Awasa, Alice Maher 

 They consisted of fabric objects, with openings, fastenings, or straps which meant that volunteers could wear or use the object, Sometimes these were worn over the head, others involved stepping into or onto fabric structures.

Maher works within the realms of nature and culture, rebellion and change, mythology and memory. Her work involves many different media including painting, drawing, sculpture, print, photographand installation.

 
exhibition The Glorious Maids of the Charnel House at the Kevin Kavanagh Gallery walks a fine line between the beautiful and the grotesque. This drawing is part of a nine large-scale drawings with familiar themes of metamorphosis and mutability for Maher. They have a hypnotic quality, an intriguing otherworldliness and a visceral strangeness that makes it difficult to look away.  The idea of carry around your pain and draw of sculptor what causing you the pain larger than your body or the area of the pain 

 

I am doing each flower different to represent each woman different experience with mesh we all had similar procedure that we have done with polypropylene mesh and we all have similar symptom but different disability and different stories. We are all the same, but we are all different. Were all in in it together but were all separate. 

I wanted to show the beauty of mothers and strength through flowers, each flower is the same lily but there all done different some have plastic in them some of the petals are in the shape of vagina . The curtains coming over the whole piece  is in see through  strips they are curtains, to represent the health department and  goverment trying to hide use away put everyone can still see us, and were not going away.. its sewn toghether to like a blanket because blanket represent comfort and there knew way better than amothers comfort. I can always keep adding on to this blanket.
