Appearance - Kamryn W by

Society is based on appearance, people judge solely on image. Social prejudice is often found on looks, whether its someones skin color, the clothes they wear, or where they hang out. Society is constantly pressuring you to "fit in".

The book "Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld, relates to my topic because it is about a futuristic society, where anyone that is normal is ugly, and anyone that goes through extreme cosmetic surgery, is considered "pretty". The Pretties get to live a lavish life of parties, mansions, drinks, fireworks, and pretty friends. The pretties fit in. While the people who are ugly, are outsiders, dreaming of the day when they turn 16. Because once they turn 16 they can finally fit in and live the gorgeous life that the Pretties get to live everyday. The book "Uglies" has a society that is completly based on appearance. The city is obsessed with everyone looking a certain way and acting a certain way.

It helped me understand by showing me how our society could possibly end up. The extremes that people already take to make themselves fit in or look better, can definitely turn into a world that this book describes. It shows examples of how far we can take our problem with appearance. People already do anything they can to be "accepted" by society, but how is it just going to stop or go away? We have a strong possibility of ending up like the book.

Since its a futuristic novel, it contains many allusions throughout the whole book. It refers to many things back in time when the "Rusties" were alive. Rustles, were people like us. The people from the past. On page 27 Shay says to Tally who is wearing a pig mask, "So let me guess, someone blew your house down?". Shay was referring to the "Three Little Pigs". It helped make the story more believable. In the story it also in clouds a lot of symbolism. One example is how the hover boards used by the characters are basically considered toys to them. Like a skateboard would be considered a toy for us. It symbolizes how much in the future this book takes place in.

This non fiction article relates to my by focusing on the subject of judgement. The whole reason of why we change ourselves to fit in and look acceptable is because of the fear of judgement. In the beginning of the article the author states, "We may be judged by our appearance, the way we talk, or just by the material items we own. People’s first impressions mean a lot, but the way you view them should not be based on just appearance. " Judging people is wrong, everyone has there own sense of style and looks. People shouldn't be put down for that.

It helped me see that judgement could be the start of our societies problem. If we didn't have judgement... then would people have insecurities? Would people be so obsessed with how they look or act? This article brought up a lot of questions about what the real problem is.

I don't think it was any fancy way, they just gave there opinion on the matter. This article puts many ideas in your head, and kind just flat out tells you whats wrong with our society. Articles like this one are easy to relate to and understand.

"The Eye of the Beholder" is a episode from a series named, "The twilight Zone". The episode is kind of twisted in may ways. A girl named Janet Tyler is normal to the viewer but to anyone else she is ugly, almost a disgrace. She has to go through many surgeries to look like everyone else, but the procedures aren't working. Everyone else has pig like faces that are considered normal. But to the viewer its the opposite. At one point the doctor doesn't understand why anyone must be judged from there outer beauty. The episode has the same concept as my topic, stating that society is based on appearance. Just a different unique way of showing it.

It makes it dramatic, and draws the viewer into the episode more. It helps you understand the message that the show is trying to convey.

It helped me understand that it doesn't even matter if your appearance is beautiful. It matters about how many people look a certain way. Kind of like bandwagoning, If a bunch of people look a certain way then you have to also. Even if you like the way you look, you have to change yourself if you want to fit in. I think it game me a new aspect of how our world could've been. Pig faces could've been what we considered pretty.
