That them being prisoners would be forever and would never end. The quote shows how hopeless they were. Their families were gone and people were dying beside them. But before that, he was so sick that walking wasn't an option. He was moaning and the guards beat him for it. Elie watched his father get beat while his father was yelling his name. Elie did nothing. For any normal child, this would be completely absurd. Yet, with everything Elie has been through this isn't completely shocking. Elie lost most of his humanity throughout his years in the camps. At this time he had lost most humanity yet he still had some left. Elie didn't move because he was scared that he would get hit. Which was a normal thing to think about in these camps. When Elie found out his father was dead, however, he couldn't react. He had no tears left to cry and he was scared of what he might say. He had no reaction because of that. Which is shocking because it was his father. Though, Elie was not a normal person anymore. The boy he once was and the last one he saw wasn't there. There was someone different. The eyes of this person were eyes that he hadn't wanted to see. Elie had then prayed. This is important to note because he had not believed in God at this time. Elie prayed that he wouldn't do the same thing that Rabbi Eliahu's son did. Elie loved his father so much that he prayed to a God, whom to Elie wasn't there, to not let him leave his father.
