The news spread rapidly locally but, in other regions it spread slowly in 1848. Trading ships carried the word to Hawaii, China, Mexico and Chile. This was the first time in history that gold was basically available for anyone and everyone to take. The rumors were confirmed by Congress in December 1848 and that was when the rush was on.

Some positive impacts were the rapid growth of the cities, the fast improvement of transportation and California becoming a non- slave state. The negative effects were that the Native Americans were attacked and pushed off traditional lands even though California had become a non-slave state and the gold mining caused a lot of environmental harm.
