Stalin took every advantage he could get in order to gain followers and emphasize the truth about himself, mainly through bribing painters, sculptures, and filmmakers. For example, he had an illustration of him hugging a child be made, which made his citizens believe that he was a sympathetic ruler, that he loved everyone. He also starred in many movies, and was portrayed as the hero.

The kulaks were wealthy Ukrainian peasants who owned large farms. However, Stalin wanted to push his idea of the government owning farms, but faced protest, especially from the kulaks. In response, Stalin began a mass genocide on the Ukrainians, known as the Holodomor. Millions of kulaks died as a result of the famine, and thousands were executed. The farms that were seized by the government were turned into collective farms, large farms that were run by the government.

The Great Purge was a massive massacre on those who opposed Stalin's beliefs. The ones who were mainly targeted were old Bolsheviks. Over 8 million people died from the purge. He also suspected people within the army and industries, torturing people to admit that they were spies, and had them executed. This put great fear into his competitors.

Thanks to Czar Nicholas II's poor decisions, Russia had hit rock bottom. He didn't appeal to the public, but instead denied them rights and better conditions in factories and work areas. For example, when around 200,000 workers marched in protest to the czar's palace in St. Petersburg. However, the czar ordered his soldiers to fire at them. Around a 1,000 were wounded and several hundred were killed. Their economy was in shambles and millions have died from the war. The people were furious. They wanted better conditions in work and life in general, and a new czar.

Joseph Stalin took over after Lenin suffered a stroke in 1922. But Lenin feared that Stalin's ruthless ways would lead to the country's demise. Stalin quickly took control of the Soviet Union, created a command economy, eliminated his opponents through exiling, but at the same time appealed to the public by creating a powerful image of himself through bribery of artists. This ensured that the public would continue to follow and support him. He continued to dominate the country, spreading Communism far and wide through his propaganda and fear.
