People want to hate him and find reasons to do so through the rumors. Maycomb culture dictates that people be social and vocal or else they will be considered an outcast. Boo Radley not conforming to that is seen as a thing to be despised and people made the rumors because they wanted to condemn him for being a recluse. The rumors kind of suggest "Don't be like him," and even if he did go outside, people would probably still hate him for missing out on the culture. Most of the rumors are started by the neighbors. They had not hear from Boo Radley so they are making up something things. thes rumors had spread fast throughout the story. In chapter 1 , page 16, I think that there was another rumor started by Jem. When Dill asked Jem what Boo Radley looks like, Jem said that ".........he had a long jagged scar  that ran across his face, what teeth he had were yellow and rotten; his eyes popped, and he drooled most
of the time." I think what Jem said was exaggerated a little bit. Another rumor was in chapter 5, page 57. It said "Maybe he died and they stuffed him up the chimney.” That rumor was starting to spread. That showed us more of Boo Radley's character. He was a kid and i think that he had missed out a lot as a kid and wants to become friends with Scout and Jem. At first, when I did not know who was leaving the gifts, I thought it was sweet but a little weird. So his way of silence is leaving small gifts like gum for Scout and Jem.
