When Emmy and Oliver were in the second grade, they were inseparable. Then the unthinkable happened, Oliver was kidnapped. Oliver's parents had separated and were in the middle of a divorce when Oliver's dad kidnapped him. Emmy was devastated, and always kept a note that Oliver gave her in class one day. Ten years passed and Emmy, Drew and Caro started their senior year of high school. It would have been Oliver's senior too if he never went missing. Emmy had thought about Oliver every single day since he had gone missing, but the rest of the world kept living their lives. Suddenly one day, breaking news struck Emmy's little town. They found Oliver. Everyone was shocked and soon the town was flooded with news stations. After the major shock, Emmy, Caro and Drew had to continue their lives the best they could. Emmy was on her way to school one day when she saw Oliver outside his house. She didn't know what to do but make a funny face. He laughed back at her, and in that moment Emmy felt like nothing had ever changed. Oliver soon came back to school, but was placed in the eleventh grade. Emmy had gone up to him during lunch one day and they started talking. Soon they get closer and started to become good friends again. They soon became more than friends. Emmy applies to a college, but only tells Oliver, because her parents refuse to let her go to a University. She also is a really good surfer and has been surfing behind her parents back for three years. She hopes that if she gets into college, she can surf for the surfing team. When she gets the news she got accepted to the University, she is so excited, but doesn't want to tell her parents yet. She tells Oliver who is over the moon excited for her. Emmy then tells her best friends about the acceptance and only Drew is excited for her. Caro is mad that she didn't even tell her she applied. They get into a huge fight and Caro starts to ignore Emmy for a long time. One night during an open house for the school, Emmy's parents find out that that she got accepted into college and they chew her out for not saying anything about it and asking for permission. Emmy then tells them everything about how she's been surfing and she thinks she could have made the team in high school if they ever would let her do anything active. Then she tells them that she wants to go to college and it's her decision too. Emmy soon gets grounded and when she goes to school the next day she tells Oliver everything and Caro stops by and they talk for the first time in a long time. Then Drew joins in and they are all one group of friends again for the first time since second grade. While Emmy is home one night alone, Oliver comes over and he's really upset about something. She asks him what is wrong and he tells her that his dad sent him a letter and wants to meet him at a diner for lunch. With his dad still being on the run, Oliver could get caught and in trouble for helping a criminal. When Oliver doesn't go to school the next day, Emmy assumes that he went and met his dad. So Emmy leaves school right in the middle of classes and goes to the diner where Oliver was supposed to meet his dad. Sure enough Oliver is sitting with his dad. Emmy was in shock to see his dad for the first time in ten years, she thought he looked different. When Oliver sees Emmy, he tells her to come over and sit with him. Emmy couldn't speak. Oliver's dad keeps talking to Oliver after saying hello to Emmy and asking hem a few questions. Soon Oliver's dad says that he has to go to the bathroom, and while he's in the bathroom, Emmy and Oliver talk about how Oliver is happy Emmy is sitting with him. When his dad comes back, he starts to apologize about everything and about how he has to do time for his behavior. Oliver soon starts to freak out and then they hear cop cars in the distance. Oliver looks to his dad who goes in for one last hug. Olivers dad had turned himself in. Emmy's mom picks her up from the diner and tells her that they will reconsider college, and wants to watch her surf and grow up. In the epilogue, Emmy is on her way to the University leaving Oliver behind this time. Emmy's parents finally let her go for once. Emmy and Oliver kiss and tell each other they love one another. Emmy also said goodbye to Drew and Caro, and tells everyone she will be back very soon.

Emmy:
Emmy is a senior in high school. She was best friends with Oliver since as long as she can remember. She is very sneaky and is always willing to try new things. She's really good a surfing, but her parents don't know she surfs until the very end of the book. If they found out she surfs, her parents would have killed her. She's best friends with Caro and Drew. When Oliver comes back home, she starts to get really close with Oliver, and they start to date. She is very smart and not very social outside of her friend group. She loves her parents, she just thinks they are too protective.

Oliver:
Oliver is a more quiet kid, and doesn't really talk to many people other than Emmy, Drew and Caro. He was kidnapped by his dad when he was in the second grade, and didn't come back until ten years later. His dad had told him that his mom was the one who left them, but really she had been looking for him for ten years. He finds out that he was kidnapped when he looked himself up on the internet and saw all the articles online. His dad had changed his name, so it was hard for him to adjust when he gets back home. He has a lot of issues with his mom, mostly because he's been mad at her his whole life, but realizes she did nothing. He really likes Emmy, and always had ever since he was in second grade.

She is very out there, and is always willing to take a risk in life.

Drew:
Drew comes from a very wealthy family, and is really good at soccer.
Conflicts:

The first main obvious conflict is Oliver was kidnapped and taken away from his family and friends by his dad. When Oliver was on a field trip, he purposefully volunteered himself to do a finger print screening knowing a missing person record would come up. He knew he was kidnapped and wanted to be found. It was resolved when the results came in that he was in fact the missing boy from ten years ago, and he is taken home. Person vs. self is being demonstrated because he had to get the courage to turn in his fingerprints. He also had to understand what this could mean for his dad.

The next conflict would be Oliver and his mom. They are both bumping heads when Maureen is just trying to get closer to him. He finds it hard to connect with his mom, because he's thought all these years it was her who left. So when he comes home, and he struggles to remind himself, she didn't do anything. They eventually get into a huge fight during a dinner one night, and it breaks both of them. Emmy talks to each one of them, and they soon start to talk about why they are so distant. They soon become closer, but still have to continue to work on it. This is person vs. person because Oliver is always going against his mom.

Another conflict is Emmy hiding her secret of applying to college and surfing behind her parents back. When her parents find out that she applied to a University and got accepted, they freak out. They punish her for lying to them, and not talking to them before applying. She thinks that since they are already mad that she should bring up the surfing. She tells them that she's been surfing for three years behind their backs. They are furious and take away everything from her. Her dad realizes that him and Emmy's mom have been controlling her, and they are just scared of loosing her. So later on, they both discuss with Emmy that they want to see her surf, and want her to go to the university she wanted to go to. They soon make up, and have no more secrets. This is also person vs. person because she's constantly fighting about her rights with her parents.

The final conflict is that Oliver's dad comes back to visit Oliver secretly. Oliver had to decide if he wanted to go see him or not. When he tells Emmy this, Emmy tells him not to go because he could be dangerous. Oliver goes anyways, and Emmy meets up with him at the diner to make sure he was okay. Oliver talked everything over with his dad, and his dad called the cops himself to turn himself in. Oliver had some closure before the cops got there, and was sentenced to fifteen years in prison. This is person vs. self because Oliver had to decide himself if he wanted to go see his dad.

The theme is don't ever give up on love. Emmy and Oliver had a connection forever, and everyday for ten years while Oliver was gone, Emmy thought of him. She always wondered what he was doing, and she never found love in anyone else but him. Another reason this is the theme is that Maureen had always loved Oliver, even when he was gone. She never gave up looking for him. When Oliver came home, she found it so hard to connect with him. She didn't stop trying though. After a giant fight, they still worked out their differences. They then became like mother and son again.

I really enjoyed this book a lot. I recommend it to all teenagers, even some adults who like young love stories. I think many high school girls would like it. I think this book was full of lessons, and I really enjoyed it. I found it amazing that two people could still love each other after ten years of not knowing each other were even still out there. I would read this book again, and have already recommended it to people!
