In October 2012, she was shot in the head by a Taliban Gunman, and gained worldwide attention when she survived.

She was already well known in Pakistan at the time; she had released a diary under the pseudonym "Gul Makai" when she was 11 to BBC Urdu which recounted her desire to stay in school and receive an education, as well as her desire to see other girls receive education as well.

She is the youngest  person to ever win a noble peace prize, and was also named one of TIME's Most Influential People in 2013. She proceeded to win the European Parliament's Sakharov price for Freedom of Thought and also released her autobiography "I Am Malala".

As school closed in winter of 2009, her and her classmates were worried that it would be the last time they would be at school because of fear of a Taliban edict restricting girls going to school.

Girls began to dress in plainclothes instead of in uniform. Other students also began dropping out due to fear of being attacked from militants.

Her family and thousands of others moved away from the valley in hopes that the government attempt at flushing out the militants would succeed and did eventually move back when they had fled.

Her identity eventually was revealed as she became more open and more vocal about her belief of girls being able to get an education

She "confronted  the US special envoy to the region at the time... urging him to do something about the state of affairs for women who want an education"

When her family moved back, she went ahead with her education and returned to school because security had improved

Due to the culmination of her vocality; as well as her refusal to back down from getting an education, the Taliban remarked that they targeted her for "promoting secular education". This is the reason behind the attack on her in October as well as threatening subsequent attacks on her and her family.

Due to worldwide attention and support, Malala got flown to the UK to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in order to receive special treatment. Her father gained a 3 year contract with the Pakistani Consulate located in Birmingham

Malala proceeded to attend high school and enrolled in Oxford for the Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) and graduated this year.

Strain Theory:  She did not have a way to continue education in a socially accepted way, as woman were expected to stay home and care after children rather than focus on educational futures like men could

Cultural Deviance Theory: Also due to her wanting to get an education and have a career rather than just being a stay at home mom which is not the norm in her society

She released her views publicly through a pseudonym in defiance of the Taliban's view on girls getting education. This is a formal norm because woman are expected to obey and accept their future regardless of what they want.

She was deviant because she implored those in power to change circumstances for girls who want education and henceforth became a target. This is a formal norm as woman would not be wanted or expected to provide an opinion or show that they have power.

She is also a deviant because she did not let fear stop her activism after her attack; she has made it become a worldwide initiative. This would be considered an informal norm as the militants would have wanted her to become a recluse out of fear.

Being a woman myself, I can immediately sympathize with being judged by your gender and having that judgement limit you to what you feel you can and can't do - as well as breaking through those judgements and doing what you feel is right regardless.

My judgments of Malala are also positive, as I'm a Canadian born Citizen I have never had to question if it would be safe for me to attend school, or if I would be stopped from attending school for an education. I have never questioned if I would have no other option than to stay at home and raise babies - instead I have been pushed to attend Post-Secondary to get a career and have a better life than my parents.
