Introduction

Closeness, as a musical element, is when musicians play each of their parts in such a way that they coordinate perfectly with the others. It gives the audience the sense that the musical elements are playing off one another so that each part seems connected and secure. Ben Ratliff states that closeness gives the listeners a jacketed feeling surrounding them in the beauty of the song. In the song, "Little Rain", the sound 'ka-chunk' played by the snare drummer was all that was necessary to give the song its allure. This exemplifies the fact that all it takes is something small to give a song a kick. Another good example for this musical concept is "Wish You Were Here" by Pink Floyd. The unity between the vocalists and those playing the instruments, at the apex of the song, makes the audience feel cloaked in music. This mixed with the lyrics gives the feeling of closeness and connection.
