The purpose of a ladder is to reach high places and points safely.

It is believed that the idea of a ladder was used over 10,000 years ago. We know this because pictures of them were discovered in a cave in Spain.

The ladder is also mentioned in the Bible. Jacob had a dream and in the dream, he saw a ladder reaching from Heaven to earth. There are different types of ladders. There are rope ladders that can be used for gym activities or they are thrown out of helicopters to rescue people from mountains. Fire engines have extendable ladders to rescue people from tall buildings or blocks of flats.

There are also fixed ladders that are used on the sides of boats or on some Lorries.

John H_ Basely of Dayton invented the step ladder in 1862. When he made it he put hinges on it so when someone had finished they could fold it away.


Some old ladders were made of rope and are still used in some countries. There are also ladders made out of wood which are quite strong they were used in world war two. Step ladders are made out of metal so they are very very strong.

The roots of the functional design of ladders as we know them today, can be traced right back to the ancient Hebrew and Egyptian cultures; these are the civilizations that developed and perfected it. Over the years, different kinds of ladders have been created to suit different purposes.

It was even used by people for curing stomach aches. Earlier american indians introduced spruce tree resin to the early settlers. They taught them about the sticky substance that could be chewed. People who had mass produced bubble gum had an idea of what if you could blow bubbles? There wasn't really enough space in the factory so they moved next to a man named Walter Diemer who wasn't anyone special just yet. All he did was calculate numbers but then one day one of the indenters told him he could watch the bubble gum prototypes until he got back. Walter quickly started to put stuff in to the mixture. The next day he went back to his office and with a little bit of time he had done it. He gave some to the people he worked with to try and it was a success. The next day it was harder than a rock but he didn't give up. He made a new batch and this time it didn't get hard. He didn't have another color so he put in all the pink he had. The day after christmas was the first time anyone from the public tried the gum. Percy was testing a new vacuum tube called the magnetron and realized that the heat melted the chocolate bar that he had in his pocket. He then went on to experiment with popcorn kernels and placed them near the magnetron and seen that it turned into popcorn. He created a metal box with an opening that he put the power through so that the energy would get trapped inside the box.
