I have chosen to compare 'Rockstar' by Nickelback and 'Forgive me' by Eric Saade They are both of two different genres Forgive me is a pop style song, and Rockstar is a rock genre song. I have chosen to analyse these tracks as they are both songs I am personally very fond of them. Both tracks send a very specific message and I enjoy seeing how artists perceive the world and how this is reflected throughout their music.
"Rockstar" shows a very 'old school' attitude towards the life of a musician."The lyrics feature the pretentious, materialistic desires of a wannabe rockstar, who craves money, cars and women." I find it very interesting that the song is written about the life of a musician as it is relevant to the course and shows how peoples aesthetics and styles effects they're lifestyle and the way they approach life and life situations.'Forgive me' is a completely different genre of music and with this its topic is very different. Forgive me is the artist apologizing for the mistakes he has made in a relationship. He shows emotions though the tones in his voice and expresses regret. The song lyrically shows how a breakup and breakdown of a relationship can effect someone and goes through a very lyrical description of its effect on himself. I like this as I feel like the artist has made the song accessible and on some levels relatable which is helpful for creating a wide audience range.
Over all both artists have two very different perspectives on life and it would be interesting to explore this through their music I will be looking into the instrumentation, dynamics, melody and rhythm. I will also be looking into the audiences for these tracks and tracks of the same genre.

My chosen tracks in terms of instrumentation

Rockstar uses a wide variety of instruments, these include the western 6 string electric guitar western style typical drum kit ( snare drum, bass drum, toms, high hat, cymbals) , drum machine, synthesizer, bass guitar and vocals These are all very basic band instruments that are used to create a very rock style feel to the song. The use of the amps which the guitars will be plugged into have a very large impact on the sound of the song. The amp features were selected to provide a very heavy and dense sound. The band may have chosen to use these specific sounds and instruments to contribute to the sounds of the time. Rockstar was released in July 6, 2006. Around this time this 'rock' style of music was very popular with youths and young adults. The vocals are sung by Chad Kroeger. Kroeger was 36 when he sang the vocals in this song and it is heard within the song. The vocals again reflect the image the song is giving, the voice is slightly raspy and sung with a old and experienced tone. The vocals are deep which works with the song as it would sound very different if it was sung by someone with higher and slightly less power to their voice. Overall I think Nickelback pulled off the use of instrumentation very well and have managed to create a good song which is very popular and effective with expressing their aesthetics.
Forgive me, again used a range of instruments, An electric guitar (6 string western), acoustic western style guitar, western style typical drum kit ( snare drum, bass drum, toms, high hat, cymbals), drum machine, keys/piano, bass guitar and vocals. These are all the same instruments used in nickel backs 'Rockstar' however 'Forgive me has a completely different sound style. It has a very sad and melancholic feel to it. It is a mixture of acoustic and electric sound style. The sound is much less dense than 'Rockstar' The acoustic sound of the song helps to add effect and express the message that the artist (Saade) is feeling miserable and regretful. I expected to hear a more Swedish influence in the song (as the artist is Swedish) however Saade decided to not use this influence in this song. The vocals are also sung in English which I found interesting as English is a second language to Saade. He may have chosen to use these lyrics and sing them in English as these lyrics expressed the way he was feeling. I have also considered the choice of lyrics and noticed Saade may have chosen to sing in English to have a wider audience. More people are able to speak English than Swedish, therefore the audience for the song is increased. Saades tone is completely different to Koegers tone, his pitching is higher and less 'old school' This works for the song and style he has created, it goes with his aesthetics and fits nicely into the style of music that is being played. Overall I think Saade has made the song work with the instruments he has used and created a very clear style along with sending a clear and strong message.

My chosen tracks in terms of dynamics

Rockstar begins with a very thin texture of just lyrics and guitar. This dynamic is very low and of a deeper pitch than my chosen compared track "forgive me" The song then progresses after 4 bars on the guitar to a gradual drum build up. There is a cymbal crash on the lyric "brand". This would introduce the listener to the song and keep the beat steady and give the listener more of a feel for what the song is about. From there on there is a constant 4 bar rhythm up until the chorus. The song then proceeds to flow into a pre-chorus. This is shown when the vocalist sings "name". The song suddenly slows and the dynamics become lower for a short while. The chorus is the part of song with the loudest dynamics and there is a sudden crescendo of sound. The electric guitar is also introduced and then used again throughout the rest of the song. Throughout the song the dynamics are fairly regular. The intro of the song has a very soft tone and low dynamic variation. as the song then progresses it becomes louder and the texture thicker. Instead of a bridge the song repeats the chorus again however with a smoother texture consisting of only vocals and guitar. The song finishes after 3 rounds of the chorus on the last line of the chorus. It finishes with a singular guitar strum after the repeated lyrics "hey hey I wanna be a rockstar"
The song starts off with the songs basics instrumentation at a relatively soft tone. the first verse is sung and the lyrics match the instrumentation with these lower tones. The pre chorus is then introduced and the song gradually becomes slightly louder, the dynamics have changed from soft to slightly louder. this could be worded as "piano" to "mezzo forte" this sound is continued throughout the pre chorus up until the chorus, there is a small pause then the song becomes louder and more powerful. The instrumentation becomes louder as do the vocals, the power is also shown through the vocals where the singer is repeating lyrics and with a more meaningful tone. Suddenly the song drops again and becomes the same level as it did before. This is another verse. The song then repeats its structure by gradually rising from soft , to slightly louder to loud throughout the verse, pre chorus and chorus. Unlike "rockstar" Saade has included a bridge. This is a very soft part of the song with most of the elements stripped and it is a purely vocal, piano and electronic drum instrumentation. The tone of the voice is quieter however at the end of the bridge the vocalist leads back into the main chorus by singing "forgive me" rising in volume as each word is sung. The chorus is then repeated a number of times with strength in the vocals however at the end of the song the drum beat is a major part along with the chords. The rest is taken out and the vocalist pitch is much higher. The dynamics have dramatically decreased causing the audience to recognise the cue that the song has finished. Both of these songs use a huge range of dynamics however I feel "Forgive me" uses a wider range and uses the dynamics to express to the listener emotions. "Rockstar uses far less dynamics which therefore makes the song less able to express these emotions the vocalist is feeling.

My chosen tracks in terms of melody

The melody of the song is very simple and has a clear and well structured melody. The verses are all set out in specific parts of the song. They always build up to a pre chorus and these always build up to the chorus. The song includes many chords and riffs. The chords are in the acoustic guitar and these are G, C, F, C and G. The chords then change for the chorus and turn to A, C, G, F, G. There are many riffs heard which are usually heard under the chorus on the electric guitar. "Rockstar" makes good use of instrumentation and occasionally uses these to harmonise with the vocals. This can be heard in the bridge and the verses. There is a very clear hook which is the chorus. The chorus is effective as it is repeated numerous times throughout the song and ensures people will remember it. The hook is also effective as the chorus because it gets louder. The dynamic of the song increases and there is a slight build-up. The lyrics are also effective in creating this hook effect as they rhyme and therefore make sense to the listener. The song has a very simple tune, and this is what makes the song easy to understand and is easy on people’s ears. The vocals are slightly harsh which might deter some people from wanting to listen to the song however they are also toned down in a way because of the instrumentation in the background.
Forgive me uses a lot of harmony throughout the song. The vocalist is almost always harmonising with the guitar background and the other instrumentation. There are not as many riffs in this song however this may be because it is a different style of song. The chords used on the guitar are E flat and B flat. The chords used on the keys are Cm, B flat, Dm, B flat Gm, B flat F, Gm F and E flat. These are almost all sad minor chords which represent the feel of the song. The hook is also very clear in the song, this is the chorus again. The same techniques are used as in “Rockstar” these are repetition and gradual volume increase. Again, the tune is also very basic which makes it as easy listen as there are not too many things happening to complicate the song and confuse the listener. The vocals are very easy to listen to and are not too harsh for the listener. It is very important to get the vocals correct as they will usually determine the overall feel of the song.

My chosen tracks in terms of rhythm

"Rockstar" is a very rhythmic song with a 4/4 time signature. there are typically 4 bars in each verse and there are simple chord strums throughout the songs underlying rhythms. The song is at 144 beats per minute and the song lasts for 4 minutes and 12 seconds. The drums are a very major part of the song and really lead the song on from the second part of the first verse. they almost have a swing feeling to it and make the song swing in a more rock style genre direction. There is also a lot of percussion used which helps to add to the rock "chilled out" vibe.
"Forgive me" is also very rhythmic however it makes more use of the acoustics and backing instrumentation to show this. The song is also in 4/4 and has 4 bars per verse. The songs strumming pattern against the drum kick makes the feel more of an acoustic sound and helps to build onto the idea that song is a sad and low toned type. the chords used are also very easy to see that they build up the melancholy feeling. The song is at 75 beats per minute and lasts for 4 minutes and 56 seconds. There are less beats per minute compared to "rockstar" which would show the difference in the songs timings. A slower song might represent sadness more than a faster one. The drum kick beat throughout the song gives a very strong song structure and helps people to understand how the song is progressing and going through.
Overall both songs use their rhythms very effectively to show the emotions and therefore they are able to convey a message.

The audience for both of these songs are very evident. Rockstar seems to be targeted towards teenagers or older young people. The song is the story of someone who wants and aspires to a particular lifestyle which seems very chilled out and relaxed this is the sort of thing which would attract teenagers and older young people. This style of music is very 2000s which is very popular for music years. Teenagers would be attracted to this sort of music as it the type of music that was popular around the age of 9 and 10. People tend to like the music from when they were younger and this music may make them feel connected to how they used to be. The message being delivered to teenagers of the age of 15 or 16 maybe 17 is very attractive to some people and they may feel inspired by these lyrics. the audience may listen to the song to gain an understanding of the vocalists lifestyle and what they want to get from life. They would want to understand the feelings that the vocalist is expressing. Some people may even have this lifestyle and be interested to see how someone thinks the lifestyle is and what it is like. Some would think the lyrics are shallow and pretentious however this may add to a reason why they would want to listen to the song. Songwriters and potential musicians may also choose to listen to this as it very clearly maps out the expectancy of a musicians life and this may be the example future musicians are getting.
Eric Saades song on the other hand would engage a very different audience. Many people of various ages would listen to this song as the lyrics are very relatable and therefore claim a larger audience range. The audience may be more females as they are the ones the song is essentially sung to. They may enjoy listening to the song as they may feel that it is what they would like someone to say to them. They may enjoy receiving the feelings that they feel they deserve and they would like it as they are hearing what they want. There may be people who would be listening to the song may also be listening as they understand the expressions that are shown.
