My group has come to the conclusion that the American dream is the pursuit of happiness, hope and bettering ones self. This theme is showed and has a major role in The Great Gatsby in several occasions. In a majority The Great Gatsby the "American Dream" is a source of hope for a lot of the characters, one of these characters includes Nick who states several times in the book that he believed "anything can happen now... anything at all". Our group said that the role it has in the story is that people that come to the city have high hope of achieving the American dream, but inside the city there is no american dream it's just an illusion. An illusion that everybody that goes in the city expecting to be rich, but realizing money means nothing. When he says that he is saying that a Gastby started with nothing, but now he is rich out of nowwhere, so anything can happen even Gastby.
