Given the variety of in-class assessments in the course outline, this course seems made for an e-portfolio as the major assessment task. - Astrid

Yes an e-portfolio makes sense. The problem is that there are 200+ students enrolled. One solution would be to have assistants do the marking, but that requires more training and resources. The other solution is to have the students mark their peers, which requires this as part of their assessment grade, and putting a rubric together for them. My experience is that some students mark their peers way to hard and some way to easy.
Chris

From my understanding, best practices in peer feedback is that peers do not grade each others' work, only provide feedback for improvement. Few students really understand the differences between good and excellent as they don't have the full view of the field of knowledge represented by the single task they are completing.

I also agree with the ePortfolio idea. I think we could combine the Culture Jamming Cut-up, Song-Speech mashup, and 1-minute video remix into the ePortfolio as a way to scaffold the project. Since all 3 assess the same learning outcomes, the same rubric could be used for all of them. This would give the students feedback along the way. I think having peer feedback would be good as well. In “Online Assessment in Higher Education”, there is a template (pg. 28) that could be given to the students to follow when giving feedback.
-Sarah

Hi team, I am also wondering, in terms of online participation marks and/or peer feedback - what do you think about the idea presented in the "online assessment" assigned reading about having students select their top 3 posts (or peer feedback) and submitting those for grading?
