Gender Role Reversals in Film

Gender roles in film have been a prominent staple in the news over the past few years. Movies such as 'Ghostbuster's' and 'Ocean’s 8' have been released with female protagonists rather than the men in the original movies. Because of the relatively new demand for female leads in films we are seeing some rushed idea’s which are taking steps backwards in the movement for equality. Movies influence viewers to think in particular ways, this includes ways in which women should be treated and presented. The character of Ripley in the 'Alien' franchise is one of the most iconic female roles on film. Director, Ridley Scott, had the character as a male but thought it would be a nice twist to have a woman as the hero of the story. Thus, giving us one of the best gender role reversals in film and a good role model for female viewers.

Terminator to Kindergarten Teacher

Arnold Schwarzenegger, the manliest man the world has ever seen try change the modern conventionalities of men. While Connell (1995, 55) tells us that bodily capabilities are a mans best economic asset when it comes to jobs with hard labour, it also helps Arnold as he now can play the role of the over-the-top action hero and then subvert those expectations in a comedic way. Arnold played both a pregnant man in Junior and a cop going undercover as a kindergarten teacher in 'Kindergarten Cop'. In 'Kindergarten Cop', the mothers in the movie are surprised to see a man in a women’s role of being a kindergarten teacher. If Arnold Schwarzenegger can divert gender associations then hopefully most movie makers can have trust in making both male and female stars equal in whichever role movies need.
