Hadith Jibril (The Hadith of Jibril on Islam, Iman, and Ihsan)

Hadith Jibril is one of the most important hadiths in Islam, as it summarizes the core of the religion. It is narrated by Umar ibn Al-Khattab (RA) in Sahih Muslim (Hadith 8) and Sahih Bukhari (Hadith 50).

📖 The Hadith (Summary)

Umar (RA) reported:

One day, while we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man appeared with extremely white clothes and jet-black hair. There were no signs of travel on him, yet none of us knew him.

He sat close to the Prophet ﷺ, placing his knees against his knees and resting his hands on his thighs. Then he asked:

"O Muhammad, tell me about Islam."

The Prophet ﷺ replied:

"Islam is to testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is His Messenger, to establish prayer, to give zakah, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj if you are able to."

The man said: "You have spoken the truth." (We were surprised that he asked and then confirmed it!)

Then he asked: "Tell me about Iman (faith)."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Iman is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, the Last Day, and in divine decree (Qadar), both good and bad."

Again, the man said: "You have spoken the truth."

Then he asked: "Tell me about Ihsan."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"Ihsan is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then know that He sees you."

Then he asked: "Tell me about the Hour (Day of Judgment)."

The Prophet ﷺ replied:

"The one being asked knows no more than the one asking."

Then the man asked: "Tell me about its signs."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"That a slave-girl will give birth to her mistress, and that you will see barefoot, naked, shepherds competing in building tall buildings."

Then the man left. After a while, the Prophet ﷺ asked: "O Umar, do you know who that was?"

Umar (RA) replied: "Allah and His Messenger know best."

The Prophet ﷺ said:

"That was Jibril. He came to teach you your religion."

🌟 Lessons from Hadith Jibril

1.
The Importance Of Salah (Prayer) In Islam

Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam and the most important act of worship after the Shahadah (testimony of faith). It is not just a ritual; it is a direct connection between a Muslim and Allah.

1. Salah is the First Obligation in Islam

The command for Salah was given directly by Allah to the Prophet ﷺ during the Night Journey (Isra’ and Mi’raj), unlike other commands, which were sent through Angel Jibril.

This shows its high status in Islam.

"And establish prayer and give zakah, and bow with those who bow [in worship]." (Quran 2:43)

2. Salah is the Key to Jannah (Paradise)

The first thing a person will be asked about on the Day of Judgment is Salah.

If Salah is correct, the rest of their deeds will be correct.

"The first action for which a servant of Allah will be held accountable on the Day of Judgment is his Salah. If it is in order, he will be successful; if it is defective, he will fail." (Tirmidhi 413)

3. Salah Prevents Sin and Strengthens Faith

Regular prayer keeps a person away from sinful acts and evil behavior.

It purifies the heart and brings inner peace.

"Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing, and the remembrance of Allah is greater." (Quran 29:45)

4. Salah Brings Peace and Removes Worries

Life is full of stress and challenges, but Salah is a way to find peace and relief.

The Prophet ﷺ would pray whenever he felt troubled.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "O Bilal, call the Adhan so that we may find comfort in prayer." (Abu Dawood 4985)

5. Salah Connects You Directly with Allah

In Salah, you talk to Allah without any barrier.

The closest a servant is to Allah is when they are in sujood (prostration).

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The closest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so make lots of du'a (supplication)." (Muslim 482)

6. Salah Separates a Muslim from Disbelief

The difference between a believer and a disbeliever is prayer.

A person who intentionally abandons Salah is in great danger.

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The covenant between us and them is Salah; whoever abandons it has disbelieved." (Tirmidhi 2621)

7. Salah Teaches Discipline and Time Management

Praying on time helps Muslims be punctual and organized.

The five daily prayers divide the day into spiritual breaks, preventing laziness.

"Indeed, prayer has been prescribed upon the believers at fixed times." (Quran 4:103)

8. Salah Unites the Muslim Ummah

When Muslims pray together in congregation (Jama’ah), it builds brotherhood and unity.

In Jumu'ah (Friday prayer), Eid Salah, and Hajj, millions of Muslims pray together, showing the unity of Islam.

"The prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times superior to the prayer offered by a person alone." (Bukhari 645)

Reflection and Areas For Improvement

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Over the past seven weeks, Usrah 1 has been an insightful experience that deepened my understanding of Islamic values, self-development, and community engagement. Through various discussions and activities, I have gained both spiritual and practical knowledge that I can apply in my daily life.

Key Lessons Learned

Strengthening My Faith
One of the key takeaways was the importance of iman (faith) and how to strengthen it through prayer, remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and sincere intentions. I learned to trust Allah more in difficult times and to be grateful for His blessings.

Islamic Ethics and Morals
The sessions on akhlaq (Islamic ethics) helped me understand the importance of honesty, kindness, patience, and humility. Learning about the character of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) inspired me to improve my behavior and treat others with respect and sincerity.

Brotherhood and Community Bonding
The concept of ukhuwah Islamiyyah (Islamic brotherhood) was emphasized, making me realize the significance of unity and supporting one another in our journey of faith. The group discussions and activities helped strengthen our bonds and encouraged teamwork.

Balancing Dunya and Akhirah
A major lesson I learned was how to balance worldly life (dunya) with the Hereafter (akhirah). I understood that my daily actions—whether in studies, work, or social interactions—should be done with sincerity and good intentions to seek Allah’s pleasure.

Self-Improvement and Responsibility
Usrah 1 also taught me about self-discipline, time management, and personal accountability. I reflected on my responsibilities as a Muslim and how I can contribute positively to my community by practicing good manners and engaging in beneficial activities.

While Usrah 1 was beneficial, there are areas that could be improved to enhance the learning experience:

More Interactive and Engaging Activities
While discussions were helpful, incorporating more hands-on activities, real-life case studies, or group projects could make the sessions even more engaging and practical.

Diverse Teaching Methods
Using multimedia resources like videos, podcasts, or guest speakers could help in better understanding certain topics. Real-life examples from different perspectives would also make the lessons more relatable.

More Time for Discussion and Reflection
Sometimes, the sessions felt a bit rushed. Having more time for open discussions, Q&A sessions, and personal reflections would allow deeper understanding and meaningful engagement.

Application-Based Learning
Instead of just theoretical discussions, it would be beneficial to have practical assignments or small challenges that encourage students to apply what they’ve learned in their daily lives. For example, a "kindness challenge" or "daily gratitude journal" could reinforce Islamic values practically.

Stronger Peer Engagement
Encouraging more group activities, collaboration, and teamwork would help students build stronger bonds and a sense of community beyond the Usrah sessions.

Conclusion

Overall, Usrah 1 has been a rewarding and insightful experience. I have learned valuable lessons about faith, ethics, and self-improvement that I will continue to apply in my daily life. With some improvements in interactivity, engagement, and practical applications, this course could become even more impactful for future students.

Maintaining and Sustaining Appreciation for Nature and the Environment in Islam

Islam teaches that nature and the environment are divine gifts from Allah (SWT), entrusted to humanity as a responsibility (Amanah). The Qur'an and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasize the importance of preserving, appreciating, and sustaining the natural world.

1. Recognizing Nature as a Blessing and Sign of Allah

Allah encourages us to reflect upon His creation as a means of strengthening our faith:

"Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of the night and the day, are signs for those of understanding."
(Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:190)

Nature is a reminder of Allah’s greatness—the sky, mountains, oceans, and even the smallest leaf function in perfect balance.

Expressing gratitude for these blessings deepens our spiritual connection with the Creator.

2. Islamic Teachings on Protecting and Sustaining the Environment

Islam promotes environmental care through the Qur'an and Hadith:

🌿 Planting Trees and Greenery

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

"If a Muslim plants a tree or sows seeds, and then a bird, or a person, or an animal eats from it, it is regarded as a charitable gift (Sadaqah) for him." (Bukhari & Muslim)

This Hadith highlights the importance of reforestation and sustaining plant life.

💧 Conserving Water and Resources

The Prophet (PBUH) advised:

"Do not waste water, even if you perform ablution on the banks of a flowing river." (Ibn Majah)

This teaches water conservation as an act of responsible stewardship.

🐾 Kindness to Animals and Wildlife

Islam forbids cruelty to animals and encourages their care. The Prophet (PBUH) mentioned that a woman was punished for mistreating a cat, while a man was forgiven for giving water to a thirsty dog (Bukhari & Muslim).

3. Practical Ways to Maintain and Sustain Nature

✅ Reduce Pollution & Waste

Avoid littering and dispose of waste responsibly.

Reduce plastic usage and recycle materials.

Support clean energy and eco-friendly alternatives.

✅ Protect and Restore Nature

Engage in tree planting and environmental clean-up projects.

Preserve biodiversity by avoiding deforestation and protecting wildlife.

✅ Live a Sustainable Lifestyle

Consume only what is necessary and avoid extravagance, as the Qur’an warns:

"And do not waste, for indeed, He does not like the wasteful." (Surah Al-An’am, 6:141)

Use resources wisely—energy, food, and natural materials.

4. The Role of Humans as Stewards (Khalifah) of the Earth

Allah has given humans the role of Khalifah (stewards) to protect and maintain the Earth:

"It is He who has made you successors (Khalifah) upon the Earth..." (Surah Fatir, 35:39)

Being stewards means we must:

Prevent destruction of the environment (deforestation, pollution, overconsumption).

Act responsibly towards nature by maintaining its balance.

Encourage others to care for the environment and implement sustainable practices.

It includes discernment, spiritual insight, and prudence.

2. Niyyah (نِيَّة) – Intention

Meaning: Niyyah is the inner intention or purpose behind an action, especially in the context of worship.

Prophetic Teaching:

“Actions are judged by intentions, and each person will be rewarded according to what they intended.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim)

Why It Matters: Intention gives meaning to actions. It transforms ordinary deeds into acts of worship when driven by sincerity and the desire to please Allah. Without niyyah, even outwardly good actions may lack spiritual value.

3. ʿAmal (عَمَل) – Action/Deed

Meaning: ʿAmal encompasses all kinds of actions spoken or performed especially those with ethical or spiritual implications.

Categories:

ʿAmal Ṣāliḥ (Righteous Deeds): Actions in line with divine guidance.

Sinful Deeds: Actions that oppose moral and religious values.

Qur’anic Emphasis: Often paired with faith, highlighting that belief must be reflected in action:

“Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds…”
(Surah Al-‘Asr)

Note: The sincerity behind an action (niyyah) determines its worth in the sight of Allah.

4. Iḥsān (إِحْسَان) – Excellence & Spiritual Awareness

Meaning: Iḥsān is striving for excellence, doing things beautifully and sincerely. It represents the highest level of worship and moral character.

Definition in Hadith:

“That you worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then know that He sees you.”
(Hadith Jibril)

Place in Faith: Iḥsān is considered the peak of religious practice, above Islam (submission) and Īmān (faith), combining both inner conviction and outward excellence.

Summary

These four principles offer a holistic framework for a believer’s life:

Ḥikmah guides decision-making with wisdom.

Niyyah gives purpose and sincerity to actions.

ʿAmal puts faith into practice through deeds.

Iḥsān elevates every act by striving for excellence and awareness of Allah.

Together, they shape a life rooted in knowledge, intention, action, and spiritual beauty
