Because he didn’t fulfill that promise and married another woman madame Zeroni put a curse on his family. Stanley has a really hard time at the camp. They are forced to do a lot of manual labor. Stanley has a hard time digging holes there due to the incredible heat and the hard, dry land. Stanley tries to become friends with X-Ray, the leader of the group at the camp but this becomes harder as Stanley becomes better friends with a boy named Zero also known as Hector Zeroni. Zero doesn't seem to be like the typical mentor but he teaches Stanly how to get used to the camp and becomes his best friend. Later in the story we can see zero bring out the heroic side of stanley.

When Stanley and Zero are climbing God's Thumb because it's the scariest part of the story. Although, throughout his journey, all of the boys are given realy awful food called sploosh. In this case the special weapon comes in a form food and water. It’s important because it helped them survive their journey. Angered, Stanley calls the Warden a liar. Zero also says that if they looked at the chest it said “Stanley Yelnats” this is one of staley’s ancestors that had the chest stolen form them. Ms. Morengo allows Stanley to take the chest home with him and let’s Zero go with him. Stanley and Zero split riches.
