While reading this book I kept thinking about my grandfather who served in the army. He came to mind because he went into the service right after high school too. He served from 1961-1969 (8 years). From stories I've heard, my great grandfather served in World War II. I recommend this book to the two brothers that served in Iraq and Afghanistan because like Richard, they joined after high school. I would connect these because there have been so many lives lost in this war just like the Vietnam war. Soldiers who come back from war suffer from PTSD which happened back then as well as I'm sure in todays war similar events happen as in the Vietnamese War. Another connection I have is two people I know served in Iraq and Afghanistan together. He went into the army because he didn't see a path that would give him the money he wanted and needed and a good future. Richard questioned himself in the beginning of the novel whether he should go into the army to seek his future. Then in the middle of the novel, he questioned himself again to see if what he was doing was what he thought it was going to be. Because he wasn't sure he waited to the end. He questioned himself again and really had to think about his future because he wasn't where he really wanted to be.
