SYNOPSIS OF INCIDENT

On a cold evening, firefighters were called to the scene of a house fire. After extinguishing the flames, one body was discovered in the bedroom of the home. Arson investigators determined the point of origin in the living room of the home. The body was found face down on the bed in the bedroom. Crime Scene Technicians took a sample from the garage, from the bathroom, and from an area near the point of origin in the living room. These samples were tested for accelerants in order to help determine whether the fire was caused by arson or an accidental house fire. Steps were taken to determine suspects in case of arson. A glove was recovered from the trunk of arson investigator Dr. Marie Stanforth and tested for similarities with accelerants involved with the house fire in question.

Upon first inspection, it is visible that the house is nearly burned to the ground. Entering through the front door and into the living room shows scorch marks and signs of heavy charring on the floor in nearly a liquid pattern, due to the flammable foam in the couch, signifying a very hot fire. This is most likely the point of origin. There is heavy smoke damage and evidence of soot in every room. Each room remaining in the house has fire damage. To the left of the living room, behind the point of origin is the bedroom. There is a body lying face down on the bed.

Sample 3, the charred sample, acquired in the living room and point of origin, tested positive for Naphtha. The brand name for Naphtha is Ronsonol Standard, which is sold on the market as lighter fluid. With the Naphtha found on a charred sample from the point of origin, we can determine that this fire was arson.

When the results of sample 2, are compared to the chromatograph of isopropyl alcohol, we find a match. This charred sample was taken from the bathroom of the home and does not appear to be suspicious or out of place.

Sample 1, taken from the garage of the home, did test positive for gasoline. While gasoline is an accelerant, it was not found at the point of origin and is a common chemical often stored within a garage area.

The glove taken from Dr. Stanforth's vehicle tested positive for the chemical Naphtha. This chemical on the glove, while suspicious, is not quite enough evidence to conclusively determine Dr. Stanforth's guilt. More evidence is needed to place her at the scene of the crime.

According to the toxicology report from the victim's autopsy, the victim had a blood alcohol content of .40 at the time of death. With the victim's BAC at .40 and his position face down on the bed, it is likely he was not conscious when the fire started. Further evidence from the autopsy is needed to confirm or refute the presence of soot in the victim's airway.

The presence of the accelerant Naphtha (lighter fluid) at the point of origin points to arson as the cause of the house fire. Although the presence of Naphtha on the glove obtained from Dr. Stanforth’s vehicle is suspect, without further evidence, such as Dr. Stanforth’s location at the time of the fire, it is not possible to determine whether or not Dr. Stanforth is a viable suspect.
