Similes:"The monster is done with our house" pg 135

These similes has compared Hurricane Katrina as a "monster", destroying her house. This can be further demonstrated on page 129
"The house shakes, teetering, in the wind and rain's violent game. Dodge ball. Tug of war. Shakes, sways, and I swear it's going to fall, fall, fall, fall over." Moreover, "Like a bullwhip, the rain lashes and lashes. It's getting heavier, like bricks. Smacking up, down, like a giant pounding with his fists." on page 132. These similes can be interpreted in ways of how tormenting it can be being stuck with in a storm of such destructive power, and the ways this can be described, it can just resemble one of your worst nightmares, but actually happening in real life.

Symbolism: Rainbow

This symbol, not very repetitive but can be well linked through out this story. For starters, "I search the sky for rainbows. I don't see any. But I know it doesn't mean they are not there." on page 217. Rainbows might appear once a rain storm has been gone, and like Lanesha's experience in surviving Hurricane Katrina, she managed to stay alive, by as well helping others, and in the way also losing someone that she loved, but at the end, her perseverance kept her strong, alive, and able to keep on with her life, yes with scars, they will heal over time, but at the end, she will find her rainbow, it might not be visible yet for the moment, but when that time comes, she will sure be a survivor of many thing life could put in her way.
