Sadly, it is a largely accepted fact that abused and neglected children are at higher risk for lower academic achievement.
Children who are abused are worrying about so many other things than their school work - like where their next meal might come from or what they will home to after school.
Another challenge is if a child is removed from their home and placed in foster care, they may have to move schools. Moving from school to school can be a challenge for students. They could potentially fall behind.

Every child deserves to grow up in a safe and healthy environment but that is not the case for everyone.
Good news is, there are ways for educators to help.
As discussed before there are many forms of abuse so you may not always see bruises on a child.
Here are a list of ways a school can help protect a child:
1. monitor changes in behaviors in a child
2. monitor self-images in a child
3. watch for attention seeking behaviors
4. watch for sudden weight loss
5. watch for lack or appetite
Those things do not mean a child is being abused/neglected but can be helpful to monitor just in case.

EIP is defined as a process of transparent, culturally sensitive and pragmatic practice choices with a client that draws on the best empirical evidence to help clients solve their problems (Massat, 2016).
There are five main goals in EIP.
1. Ask relevant questions
2. Gather data through research
3. Examine the data collected
4. Combine Evidence with Own Expertise and Clients' Preferences
5. Evaluate Entire Process and End Result
These steps will help to know if a solution was made and if the child is better off now.

Monitoring a students process is so important, because knowing if they are better is the goal. A few ways to monitor are to have daily or weekly meeting with them, have them right down their feelings and of course for physical abuse you would need to check their bodies for new marks.
