I think map reading a useful skills for cadets to have. It is a basic skill that might be use in times of need.

HQ can help to do a one day development course to help TO/HO/CI be able to teach topography effectively.

We can also consider an island map reading activity once the basic fundamentals of topography is established. This can be one of our signature programme.

Zulkifli
Pasir Ris Sec

Pegs
Can HQ review the use of pegs during campcraft competition such that cadets do not use peg to hammer another peg into the ground? The likelihood of the striking peg hitting the fingers or hand is very high as the surface of the pegs are curved and thus it is more likely to miss for the cadets.

The metal pegs are very heavy for students, possible to review on the type of pegs for campcraft in campcraft competition? HQ should take the lead to change the type of pegs that are lighter in weight, and easier to use than follow past traditions.

Manila Hemp
Please consider the change of ropes from manila hemp to nylon ropes for the safety of the cadets as they can get cuts from the manila hemp during handling or tying of the ropes with the spars.

Spars
Is it necessary to use the spars we are currently using at the campcraft competition? In Scouts, the cadets wear helmets when handling Spars and tying of spars to create the flagstaff. Perhaps, HQ can consider an alternative type of poles for cadets to use for their safety.

The only time cadets pitch a tent is during CC Competitions. Other UGs don't even build these tents or even sleep in them during their camps. Realistically, no one builds these tents anymore.

Maybe its time for a change.

Less on tent pitching but more on application of knots and lashing? We should even add in Map Reading as most students would have learnt that in Geography lessons but lack the application.

Working with pegs and spars can be very dangerous if not handled properly.
